Luke Kelly - 25 years gone but not forgotten
Puke - a lot of people have thrown that music snob line at me now. Maybe it is true :p
No smoke without fire farmer;)

Grew up listening to Luke Kelly as he was adored by my Da.
Remember learning all the words to Monto when I was only 7 or 8 years old-still know them and will blast out the song myself at a party and a few drinks in me.
I remember talking to a few Japanese women in Florence a few years ago and when I said I was from Ireland, the first thing they said was Luke Kelly.
The man is an out and out legend. We’ll never see his likes ever again.

Here’s Monto-

And here’s the song I think that is quintessentially Luke-

My favourite Kelly songs are the following:

 1. The Sun is Burning
 2. The Foggy Dew
 3. Will You Come to the Bower

Don’t have access to YouTube in work but will post later on if I think of it or could be arsed or are available which they are probably not.

No love for Raglan Rd Farmer?

His greatest performance imo, full of pathos, used excellently at the end of In Bruges.

Just for farmer

Nice one Mackster.

MBB - Raglan Road wouldn’t feature for me. A great song and all that but not as good as the others.

Would have to admit I wouldn’t know any of those songs all that well farmer. I think an afternoon of Luketube in the earphones could be called for.

A pity most of our generation could never have seen the likes of him or Lynott live in person. At least it means we’d only ever think of them in a positive light.

We haven’t really had anyone in recent eyars. When you think that the likes of Gallagher and Lynott were breaking the mould and kicking back against the oppression of the Catholic Church on Irish culture in the 70s you think that these were proper rock stars.

I blame Louis Walsh. The influx of this boy band X Factor shite has created a greed amongst potential future rick stars to sell themselves out and get the quick buck.

Can’t say I blame them but it is a sad state of affairs.

Shame on you, how can you all forget Johnny Logan?

Very true.

I was chatting to another lad in here who’s in his late 30’s who worked abroad for most of his life yesterday about music. I was talking about the Springsteen gigs last year and he asked me if I had any time for U2 as a band. I told him I saw them once live and had no great inclination to really go out of my way to see them again as I thought they’d got fairly bland in the last 5 years.

He was saying that for his generation U2 will always be respected as they were the only good thing associated with Ireland when he was younger. He also said that if Bono had died 15-20 years ago the band would probably have worked out to be 3 or 4 times more successful as they would always be remembered as legends similar to Kelly and Phillo. Hadn’t thought of it like that but its probably true.

Absolutely. U2 deserve respect and credit for what they did for Irish music.

They are really all we have in terms of rock bands.

Just a pity Bono ruined it all with all his shite in the past few years.

True.

I don’t know why some people can’t grow old gracefully without trying to stay young.

Fantastic Stuff on Telefis Eireann at the moment.

Who’s Luke Kelly?

Des Kellys brother, he gives him a hand with the carpets.

Are they brothers of the Kelly sisters?

Ya, they had a band as well. The Kelly Family.

Sometimes, I wish I was an angel…
