Stephen Kenny has to be backed. You cannot make a manager serve a six month audition to keep his job based on friendly matches and/or a few Nations League matches.

Doing this would have a material negative influence on his ability to do the job in the same way Mick McCarthy’s approach was influenced negatively by the short term nature of his contract.

Compared to playing these lads at home I think you’d have to say there’s empirical evidence that we’ve made genuine progress. We had a lot of possession at home but didn’t know how to attack. We were able to create chances today and the passing was braver and quicker throughout. We have clearly tuned a corner.

Kenny deserves another tournament. I look forward to the euros with the believe that we can be very competitive and even finish in the top 2. I’m told that 3rd might be good enough for the euros anyway.
