Lads this a thread for celebration of great Irish rugby knock out victories. I don’t want it ruined by petty squabbling over which sport is better. After yesterdays shock defeat this is a thread to unify the board and find comfort in the better days. Just need someone to get the ball rolling
We’ve won one tournament knock out game, which was the 1958 World Cup group play-off against Czechoslovakia, in which Peter McParland scored twice to give us a 2-1 extra-time win.

The Eire part of the island of Ireland are the only side in the history of the World Cup stretching back to 1930 to make it to a quarter final and go home without winning a game (1990 in Italy). Eire have never won a knock out game in a World Cup or even made a knock out game in the European Championship and in 2012 earned the dubious record for the worst performance at a European Championship (stretching all the way back to its inception in 1960) losing all 3 group games, scoring just once and conceding nine.

Eire drew 0-0 with Romania in the Round of 16 in 1990. Due to soccer’s bizarre lottery system they advanced to face Italy in the quarter final, where there were eliminated. Eire had earlier drawn their 3 pool games against England, Holland and Egypt.
When Peter McParland was performing his heroics for your side Northern Ireland back in 1958, things were done properly. There were replays/play offs, rather than farcical lotteries to decide who would advance. Northern Ireland & Czechoslovakia both won 1, drew 1 and lost 1 of their 3 group games to finish behind Germany who had won 1 and drawn 2 of their games to top the group. A replay/play off was organised which as has been said Northern Ireland won 2-1 after Czechoslovakia had taken an early lead.
Every knockout game has a winner or loser, it’s the essence on knockout.
