Another thought provoking post from Bandage on another thread has got me thinking-do posters call their mothers mam or mum? I say mam but some of my friends say mum. I also have great difficulty around mam’s birthday and mother’s day trying to find a card that doesn’t say mum as I’d feel like a bit of a cunt giving her a card that says mum or mummy when I’ve never called her that in my life! Lol.

Any thoughts guys?[/quote]
I have only one thought about your mother, mate. And it involves her shitter.
Mam, Mum, Ma and Mumsy-Wumsy are all regularly used.
My mother has her flaws, but, hey, she cuts my hair, makes great desserts, gave birth to me, and even sometimes gives me a lift into Gorey. So you know what? She’s awllllright.

She brought you into this world just to die. Don’t you ever forget that!
My younger sister brought “mom” into the mix. Bit American. Sorry if this doesn’t fit nearly into the mam or mum categories of this thread. Admins feel free to move this post to the mom thread.
Mam is the way to go in my family, and I think that would be the case for most Irish households. Mum is a bit namby-pamby, but it isn’t uncommon unfortunately. In particular, people in the west tend to use it more for some reason, probably some sort of repressed Freudian desire to please the culture of the pale dating back to Cromwellian times. Mom is completely unacceptable unless you’re from Cork or Kerry, where it is the king of motherly callings.
What really annoys the shit out of me is when parents allow their little cunts of children to call them by their first name. If I ever have kids and they call me by name, a severe arse reddening is what they’ll get in reply.

When I was going through a brief rebellious/stupid phase as a teenager I started to call my father by his first name. This particular rebellion was quashed swiftly and with force.
