Managerial Merrygoround Thread

Don’t really understand this move by Coyle.

Burnley have confirmed that boss Owen Coyle has held talks with Bolton over the Trotters’ vacant managerial post.

The 43-year-old Scot will now meet Burnley chairman Barry Kilby to discuss whether he will complete a move to the Reebok Stadium or remain at Turf Moor.

Bolton are looking for a new manager after sacking Gary Megson last week.

Megson, 50, was axed after a two-and-a-half-year stint in charge, with the club 18th in the Premier League and facing a battle against relegation.

In a statement on the club’s website, Burnley said discussions between Coyle and Kilby would take place following Coyle’s return from Scotland on Monday.

The club added it would not make any further comment at this time.

After witnessing Coyle’s team in action on the pitch as well as his performance off it this season, I am convinced he is destined for big things. Bigger than Bolton? To be brutal, yes.

If Coyle decides to head for the Reebok, Bolton will be required to pay Burnley compensation in the region of 3m - as dictated by a clause in the 12-month contract extension he signed in the summer.

Having played for Bolton between 1993 and 1995, Coyle would be a popular appointment with fans, who regularly hit out at Megson for what they perceived to be his negative tactics.

Trotters chairman Phil Gartside had Coyle, a former striker, on his shortlist for the Bolton manager’s job before he appointed Megson in October 2007 and subsequently recommended him to Lancashire rivals Burnley, where he took over the following month.

During his time at the Clarets, Coyle has revolutionised the club, masterminding their promotion to the top flight for the first time in 33 years.

Despite making a good start to the season, which included a victory over Manchester United, Coyle has voiced frustration at the lack of resources at his disposal in comparison to local rivals such as Bolton.

And recent results have left the club in 14th place, two points above the relegation zone.

Yeah, seems odd enough but he hasn’t actually gone yet. He hardly built up that much of an emotional tie to Bolton seeing he only played there for a couple of years so it seems at first look like he’s doing the equivalent of dumping a fairly ugly bird only to immediately hook up with a different ugly bird.

How long before KIB man comes on here and saying that Bolton are a bigger club than Celtic

He’ll be seething you stole this thunder from him.

Strange move all the same, Celtic must realy have no money whatsoever.

Not sure he was ever offered Celtic managers job to be honest. That article farmer copied has Coyle down as a Scot!

I was under the impression he was first choice, I think I saw it quoted somewhere. I’ll obviously bow to the better knowledge of Celtic FC followers on here.

Maybe he was but I heard many conflicting stories myself. If he wasn’t ahead of Mowbray in the pecking order then he should have been anyway!

Glasgow Celtic must be the equivalent of Kelly Osbourne so

Wigan, Burnley, Preston all better looking

Predictable if nothing else.

True, your ultra quick one line response is consistent day or night

Sky Sports News showed a press conference clip of the Burnley chairman there. He said, ‘Owen said to me that Bolton and Celtic are the only 2 clubs he’d have left us for.’ Great for Celtic to be in such esteemed company.

Coyle confirmed as the new Bolton manager

The odds of Gary Neville to take over at Burnley have been cut from 50-1 to 8-1

Inside sources tell me that the deal came close to collapse this morning due to “a major sticking point” betwee the parties. However Bolton chairman Phil Gartside finally relented on Coyle’s demands for free tickets to all four days of the UK Open darts at the Reebok stadium this June, hence this afternoon’s announcement.

Fenlon deal has fallen through.

Either Brian Laws or Sean O’Driscoll will take over at Burnley…

Weird going for Laws - wasn’t he sacked from Sheff Wed?

Don’t know anything about the other lad.

Surprised they wouldn’t go for someone like Curbishley - proven track record in the EPL and would be desperate for the job I would say.

Sean O’Driscoll is Irish. Did well at Bournemouth and as Leeds fans will recall managed Doncaster to beat them in the League 1 playoff a couple of years back. Aint likely to see EPL action with Doncaster but would be best to stay clear of the Burnley job imo. Will probably have a bigger Championship club looking at him soon.

SSN reporting that Brian Laws has taken over at Burnley…

This is a wind-up surely?

O’Driscoll was 1/25 yesterday to get the job and I was serious contemplating laying it but didn’t after I got my fingers burned laying Coyle for the bolton job…
