Yeah though their styles can be very different. Klopp was very pally with his players, Dalglish very distant. But you certainly need to be able to draw a clear line and have the respect of everyone.
Loads of examples in other sports, particularly GAA.
There was a pretty strong gutting of the squad from when Lennon took over at Celtic. Maloney, Wilson, Naylor and McGeady (Maloney and Wilson if you consider when Lennon took permanent charge) were the only players (I can think of) who would have been team mates with Lennon.
what happened with lennon and alan thompson?..i remember a celtic fan telling me that lennon cut him loose to save himself as they both were fond of a nite out…any truth or just nonsense…
Lennon quickly got rid of any former team-mates he had played with.
Chelsea’s gradual rise throughout the 90s was under three player-managers -Hoddle, Gullit and Vialli.
But Attilio Lombardo’s tenure at Crystal Palace (swith Tomas Brolin as interpreter) is probably the most obviously successful instance of the player-manager.
I think that certainly applied to Thompson but it seemed to be Thompson alone. Don’t think Lennon would get away with many nights out in Glasgow. Certainly the stories seem to be just that Thompson went a bit out of control so the club let him go when he didn’t reform after being warned.
Commons was at Forest with Lennon too. He referred to Neil as “Lenny” in the press conference where the signing was unveiled and Lennon butted in and told him not to use his nickname in a half messing / half serious kind of way.
My source in Glasgow says Lennon used to accompany Thompson on a fair few of their west end sessions. But Thompson took the level of drinking to a different level. He was regularly coming into training locked and was also apparently done for drink driving on his way into training one morning after a particularly heavy session. The Board decided he had to be dispensed with.
Reports coming out of Italy suggest that Benitez to Napoli is a done deal. Bit surprised at this if I’m honest, his reputation in Italy is pretty low after his stint at Inter, maybe somewhat mitigated by the succession of failed managers since then although many would point the blame at Benitez in the first place. He’s supposed to be earning €3.5m which is a lot for Napoli to be paying a coach, they do have CL football this season and will probably earn a big fee for Cavani.
Presumably he will revert to a back four which is going to be very interesting as this Napoli squad has only played with 3 at the back for the last 3 years and the playing squad is very rigid with personnel designed to do so. I just don’t think Benitez is suited to Serie A.

In fairness to Rafa, he played with a back three at Liverpool on numerous occasions especially in the 2007/2008 and 2008/2009 seasons IIRC. It was mainly used against sides lower down the table but he isn’t adverse to using it
He is distinctly unimpressed about being let go when he has lead Bayern to one of their most successful seasons ever* and feels he has something left to prove to them.
Marca are reporting that Ancelotti will be announced as Real Madrid manager on June the 3rd once Florentino Perez is elected for another term as President.
Looks like Stramaccioni is being sacked so it’s very likely Mazzarri is the man to the step into the void there. I wonder what implications Ancelotti’s possible acceptance of the Madrid job will have, is Allegri then favourite for the PSG job? If so, where will that leave Roma with both Mazzarri and Allegri unavailable?
