I know it’s corporate jingoism but players are still afraid to come out as gay. It’s a sad state of affairs. I’m prepared to put my cynicism for corporations aside for this one.
That’s a societal issue though not a football one. Also lots of Muslim beliefs are incompatible with western beliefs. Do you think Muslims should be excluded from western society?
Sport is a huge part of society. Football stadiums the perfect platform. I’m not saying the Ipswich captain should be excluded from society. Just saying he shouldn’t be captain of the club if his beliefs are at odds with the majority of the team.
I would say there does seem to be a remarkably small percentage of footballers that are gay. Must be a very manly sport.
There’s one current player and one ex player. Two gay men in the hostory of association football.
Two real outliers.
No women have played men’s professional soccer either. It’s not for everyone.
Agreed sport is a big part of society and a good platform to promote LGBQT+ rights if people choose to do so. I don’t think forcing people to do against their will is a good idea and I definitely don’t think employers should sanction their employees based on their religious beliefs whether I would agree with those beliefs or not.
If their sporting organization decides to turn agin abcdefghijklmn rights next year, do players then speak out against gay rights?
This is just another part of the neoliberal agenda to fragment society so that there’s no social cohesion, just consumers.
No one forced him to do anything. You had people throwing bananas at black players in the late 80s. They had a kick out racism campaign across football grounds. Thankfully there is little need for it nowadays. A similar approach to dealing with homophobia would seem logical to me. The only ones to object would be homophobes themselves.
You’re way off there
There’ll always be racists but I imagine there’s very little racism tolerated at football grounds. They’re fucked out and banned. Long way from lads throwing bananas.
Players around various leagues objected to kneeling against racism. So leagues scrapped it.
By all means have campaigns. Advertise all you want and let players speak out if they want.
Coercion is never the answer.
Kick it out didn’t stop the bananas. It was only set up in the mid 90s by Herman Ouseley. He himself even grew very frustrated with how it was welcomed by football towards the end. He felt it was mere lip service all the t shirt wearing etc and in truth football was doing very little, and that racism towards players was in fact on the rise.
The most pathetic thing of all was when he died the fuckers didn’t even hold a minutes silence for him.
I’m not saying Kick it Out was the reason racism declined. It didn’t do it any harm though. What harm can highlighting the ignorance of intolerance do?
I agree but virtue signalling helps few and doesn’t solve the problem, much like Herman felt about how English football treated the Kick it Out campaign.
Talk about whataboutery! You’re correct nobody forced him to do anything but you want him stripped of his captaincy which is a dangerous road to go down. The vast majority of Muslims would share his views on homosexuality so I think from what you’re saying is that we need to get rid of Muslims to rid ourselves from homophobia? That’s the logical conclusion of your argument.
Ah he’d been as well wear it, shur beliefs are a load of aul cock.
some more whataboutery maybe,
but what I dont get is how under their religious beliefs, they cannot and will not tolerate gays. No way. Its my religion. Even for one game, not on.
Now, let me put on my jersey with the betting sponsor logo on it and play in the ground sponsored by the gambling company and on the TV stations sponsored by the gambling companies. And say nothing. Even though that is against my religious beliefs.
This hiding behind my religious beliefs is a real cop out instead of just saying they are homophobic.
