Rio was the worlds most expensive centre half at the time I’m pretty sure. Rooney was the most expensive teenager ever. Not great examples

They weren’t galacticos though. They were signed when they had a clear upside. Not only on the field where it made total sense to sign them but also in a business sense. No matter how bad they would turn out to be they’d have some sort of resale value. Their wages were in keeping with a structure. Sanchez and falcao had little upside. They were short term options at ridiculously high costs. De gea is another example. There are countless. Hopefully big rom and Sanchez are gone soon. Hererra is off too and mata should not be given a new contract. I’d be very surprised if united aren’t third next season. They’ll need 3 windows to challenge city again at least.
