Matters Regarding Limerick 🏙️ (Part 1)

 Bitterness is the bedrock of Limerick club rubby

The now is a good bit old as well. There’s a lidl there

They could do a lot with the docks if they wanted.

Limerick 2090 maybe

Not a bad idea. Call it the Docklands quarter and then not actually do anything with it.

Can anything be done with that huge site on O’Curry St / Dock Road?

I know they had to spend a fortune extracting some toxic residues from whatever industry was there previously.

There was talks of this, the site couldn’t be used for two years according to that, but that’s up now.

Prime bit of real estate, but surrounded by not so nice real estate. Would make perfect sense as a site for a massive apartment block

3 years I think

Be that now before they get planning anyway

You could solve Mary I’s accomodation needs there fairly quickly and also free up some housing.

I remember when they blew it up (or tried to!) Everyone and their dog was lined up to see Ranks come down but there was a problem with the detonation and it was postponed.

Happened shortly after then.

I remember it differently.

They tried to blue it up a couple of times and then gave up due to making other buildings unstable. Knocked it down bit by bit then.

Yeah, they tried it a few times, expectations building all the while. Didn’t realise they abandoned the TNT altogether.

We’re any of the blasts successful? I’m fairly sure there were loud bangs and dust clouds but you have me questioning that now you bollocks.

Had a look for it myself. I remember the excitement being brought down to watch it.

The first attempt at demolition using 750lbs of Frangex explosives caused the silo to merely “quake” [2]. On the second attempt, using 850lbs of explosives, the structure ‘just jumped ten feet in the air and sat down’ [3]. Its jaunty 75 degree angle quickly earned it the soubriquet The Leaning Tower of Limerick . Adopting a less-is-more approach, the third attempt used 450lbs of Frangex ‘but did not appear to have the slightest effect on the stubborn silo’ [4]. The silo eventually succumbed to the wrecker’s ball in July 1989 with its destruction making the headlines of The Limerick Leader

The author of that article may or may not have posted here briefly previously.

@Copper_pipe who was targeted in these raids?

Six homes raided and 30 arrested following major Garda operation in Limerick (irishexaminer.com)

I heard they raided in Assumpta Park and Maiden Street. 2 new BMWs taken away on a recovery truck.

5k worth of drugs divided by 30 people could be get them all under the personal use threshold
