Matters Regarding Limerick 🏙️

Yanks don’t care about rugby though nor most British

It’s something to do, they don’t need to have an interest in it. Is that not the whole point of travelling abroad? New experiences?

There was an AFL museum in Melbourne, I presume there still is, it was something to do, recomended by guidebooks etc, every fucker went there
If this is full of bells and whistles it’ll attract the crowd that comes to Limerick, whether thats enough to sustain it only time will tell, most lads here praying it falls flat on it’s face of course :grinning:

I hope it does well. The GAA museum is surely more niche and is still going. Only JP could get planning for it though.

Add it to the castle and the hunt museum and you have enough for people to do for a weekend in Limerick.

Inspite of all the complaints about it, and it’s far from perfect, Limerick city is in a much better place than it was 10 or 15 years ago. These things can only help.

I see hens and stags regularly around the place now. You would never have seen that even 5 years ago. Loads of good bars opened in the last few years. I’d burn that 101 to the ground but it’s a great spot for a hen or for women in general. Treaty city brewery, mother Macs, Crew. All great additions to go with the traditional pubs which were always going well.
City needs a hostel though.

Some great employers in the city now as well. Regeneron, Stryker, new factory being built in raheen, J&J, Northern Trust etc etc

That Operah centre needs to be built asap. It’s half the city and it lying idle under the council’s control.

But overall. Limerick is on the right track. There’s a great opportunity for Limerick if the council just let houses get built. We can mop up a lot of IDA investment being that bit cheaper, if we can find the accomodation to bring people in.

You would do well to purchase any land to build on around the big industrial estates in Limerick/Shannon. It’s all long been snapped up for expansion but housing is a critical problem for all companies. They are securing accommodation themselves now but it’s a tricky situation having accommodation tied into employment

There’s loads of space to build in Limerick. The city isn’t hemmed in by any mountain or sea. They just need to get on with it. And do it aggressively

I’m amazed Bishops Quay 1 is being built as majority office space. It should be all apartments. They’ll struggle to let it as office space. The Opera Centre should have a greater bulk of accommodation as should Cleeves.

I’d imagine the fear for the council is if they start building accommodation on those sites they’ll be forced to have it as council / low cost accommodation and the whole development will go to shit.

Could well be the case. Some of the apartments two minutes down the road from there aren’t the most appealing.

The Debenhams building will be an aparthotel. It should really be retail.

Is there any demand for retail anymore though?

Need to get people into the city first and the retail will come back by itself. Fucking phone, vape and coffee shops seem to be all the retail the city can handle. And phone shops are for money laundering only

You might be right and it could be the reality. Would surely help a lot having one or two large stores in there instead of Childers Road / Crescent though.

Retail and a midweek late evening economy would boom in a compact city like Limerick if you could get decent quality apartments or even co-living spaces built for young professionals.

Is the hanging gardens building still empty, I’m never in town during the week anymore but I havent heard of any companies going in there since the aviation leasing crowd left.

A pity if it is still.

The crescent shopping centre was probably the worst thing to happen any provincial city centre in the country when you think about it.

They’ve nothing like it in terms of scale or size in Cork, Galway or Waterford etc

Not sure about the situation elsewhere, but the fact that it’s a ten minute drive from the city centre is a significant issue particularly when there are vacant premises in the city.

In fairness you can’t blame the Crescent owners either but the niavity initially in terms of planning hasnt helped the city centre from a retail perspective anyway. Its struggling for 30 years really since. The cruises street creation in the early 90’s was an abomination as well. Units werent fit for purpose.

To @Julio_Geordio’s post above. There is plenty to be optimistic about though too. Things have changed drastically from 2009 when Dell etc cut thousands of jobs and there was serious doom and gloom around the place. Disposable income is higher on average than anywhere really outside Dublin too.
