Relatively unprecedented for a manager to quit half way through a league campaign. Would have liked to have seen him stay. The only bright light of the league campaign was their dismal run. The All Ireland winning Minors don’t seem to be making much of an impact.
I wonder if Fergal O’Donnell will take over now. He managed that Minor team and was a very good player in his day as well. About the only one of them I ever found tolerable.
The Roscommon County Board has confirmed that it has accepted the resignations of the county’s senior football management team of manager John Maughan and selectors Eamon McManus and Gerry Fitzmaurice.
This follows a series of depressing league results, including heavy recent defeats away to Armagh a fortnight ago, followed by another walloping by Westmeath on Sunday.
It is another difficult chapter for Roscommon who have found it hard to get the mix right on the playing field in recent seasons.
Roscommon county board officers meet on Monday night and it is believed they discussed the future of the senior team management structure.
There is speculation that Fergie O’Donnell, who masterminded the county’s All-Ireland minor triumph three years ago, may be approached to take over for the remainder of the league and this year’s championship.
Maughan has previously managed Mayo to three All-Ireland final appearances (1996, 1997 and 2004).
I know a lad from Roscommon (who else on here can say they know anyone else from an irrelevant county like that?) and they despised Maughan down there. They resented the fact his main priority and focus while managing Roscommon still appeared to be on Mayo. He rarely attended club games in Roscommon to assess his squad’s form or to unearth new players, instead attending Mayo fixtures and writing about them in a local newspaper column. After their qualifier defeat last summer he ignored waiting local journalists and left the ground without giving any quotes as he sped off to Mayo’s fixture later that day. That said Roscommon people and their players are apparently as mad as a bag of rabbits as indeed most folk west of the eastern seaboard are.
Paul Early confirmed to be temporarily taking the reigns. I actually know a few people from Roscommon too, and would have gone to a lot of their games in dublin and even a few in Roscommon with the lads for a good piss up. Mad lads alright, and always had great craic. Mayo is where their hatred lies, so Maughan going isnt a big suprise I suppose.
In my time I have known about three Roscommon people reasonably well. One was sound albeit a bit boring, then there was another complete boring lad and the other was an absolute tosspot. Due to our many meetings with them in football I have seen them on a larger scale and I swear if I had a bomb I would blow the fuckers to kingdom come. It is hard to describe them but they would have to be the most annoying, obnoxious fuckers I have ever met.
The thing about Roscommon is that it is an absolute hole. Flocks of them come across the Shannon into Carrick (our side of it - not theirs) on Saturday nights because they have nowhere in their own shithole of a county to go. I got into a row with a pile of them when they beat Galway a few years back and Galway came back to subsequently beat them through the back door. They were all over Carrick with their Ballymore Properties stupid yellow jersey and told to get back over their own side of the Shannon and celebrate there if they wanted. They didn’t take kindly to that but fook them - they are only vermin.
I would love to know where Roscommon think they should be. They are a rubbish team with no decent players and are compltely out of their depth in Division 2 with the likes of Dublin, Monaghan, Armagh and Cork. That is being shown up but don’t shoot the messenger i.e. Maughan.
