No sneering. Tbf I only heard him commentate for the first time yesterday as you know it isn’t for me.
I keep an inexhaustive list of commentators I like. I notice you didn’t comment on the others putting forward their favourites.

You’ve lived a sheltered life, or else you are a liar.
Yet keeps an in exhaustive list of fav commentators?
Doesn’t everyone?
No one else listed 50 or anything close to it. Just seemed a bit excessive. I suppose it bega the question that if you never heard MOM how do you know the 50 odd lads you listed are better than him?
I never watched what he commentated on. My understanding is that Ryle, George Hamilton and Fred Cogley did some time on the GGA and I wouldn’t have heard that either.
In terms of being sheltered, I wouldn’t expect lads who grew up in two channel land to have that much exposure. I’m sure @binkybarnes got a bit of BBC and HTV to be fair to him but I can’t comment on his worldliness as it doesn’t come across here.
As I said, I keep a list. I enjoy commentary.
In fairness I should have added non sports persons like Marty Whelan on the Eurovision and Nicholas Witchell on Trooping the Colour for completeness.
I never watched what he commentated on unless I was at the actual match he was commentating on. That’s because he was a radio commentator.
Exactly. Shows what I heard of him. Very little. I can only go on the snippets I heard in the background of the news last night but I’m entitled to have a list of those I enjoy too.
I grew up with Roundball Rock and Grandstand, others were stuck with what they got here.
You are entitled to keep an inexhaustive list of your favourite commentators.
I’m surprised Stewart Hall didn’t get a mention? Was he crossed off your list?
At what age does one start such a list?
Thanks. I also have sports stadiums I’ve been to that I’ve published here.
I also have tv sports themes and wider themes (e.g. news) that I can share.
I always associated him with the “low brow” game show and entertainment fare that the BBC put onto compete with ITV.
Was there more to him? I see he was a sex offender which is a curse of all walks of life to be fair. Tom Humphreys of course a good example from your favoured past times.
He rarely commentated on TV. The radio was his mainstay. Surprised you never heard him on Sunday/Saturday Sport on RTE over the decades.
I lived abroad for many years and wouldn’t have listened to RTÉ radio except for current affairs.
I used to enjoy Today FM’s Premier League coverage with that lad from the country who sounded like he was from South Dublin.
@Keadyshouldhaveplayedin89 mentioned yesterday listening to MO’M’s commentary while attending games & how enjoyable it was.
I always found that a weird GGA quirk, typically favoured by muldoons but I note you’re a Dub who does this also. Please note I’m not making any assertion as regards the muldoon status of @Keadyshouldhaveplayedin89 in this post.
Why drown out the crowd atmosphere by listening to commentary? Not as odd as the rubby crowd paying to have access to what the referee is saying though.
Michael McMullan IIRC.
Moykal.
He had a great put down about a young player. I think it might have been a Laois footballer cc @myboyblue .
A great minor last year. …not so good this year.
