Modern Warfare 2 - xbox 360
Any idea what kind of speed you need, i got the fastest one available anyway. My HSDPA is 7.2 & my HSUPA is 5.76, down & upload in english.
If thats good enough then mighty, if not fuck it. I have no problem with taking on the computer. I’m playing Madden Pro and FIFA Pro at the moment, i prefer it to just playing regular games.
Give it a go anyway it might work fine, the first thing you should do if you get online is buy yourself a copy of modern warfare 2.
Let us know if the 3 mobile works for ya

Oh without doubt, thanks for help. The first one was absolutely sensational i thought.

ya it was, way better then world at war that came out last year, this new one seems to be a new level again though…

knowing your form taz, you’ll frag yourself :D:D

just about to start off in 5

I haven’t properly gotten into a game since I bought Zelda for the N64 way back in 98, that consumed me for a good three weeks and no game (with the exception of Championship Manager/Football Manager) has come near since then. Can one of you nerds tell me (in bullet points):

  • how much it would cost me to get an xbox 360 with all the equipment needed
  • if there are monthly charges for playing online
  • what other games are decent for the xbox 360

Bearing in mind that TP McNally already has a PS3 in the house the answers should be quite convincing for me to part with my cash.

I moved home there over the weekend and due to this i have far less expenses, I am considering buying a new console to put down my days(i can only walk the dog so far)…Is the xbox 360 superior to the PS3 or are they similar enough…

The 360 is cheaper which would suit me, are mirosoft planning on bringing out a new console to replace it anytime soon?

As I said before I have a PS3, my brother has an x-box 360 so I have played the both a good bit
If you are a casual gamer that is just going to use it one in a while, there probably isnt a whole pile of difference between the two, I choose an PS3 because my friends have them and we can play online together so that was the deciding factor for me.

I will briefly go through each one

X-Box 360 Elite

  • Ready to go at 250
  • Xbox live is an extra 50
  • Normal DVD
  • needs cable or dongle (dongle might be free in the elite package, if not it is pricey)
  • Exclusive games - Halo, Gears of war
  • online service better

PS3 Slim

  • 300
  • PSN network free
  • Blu-ray DVD player
  • wireless built in (for connecting to router
  • Can surf the web, visit any webpage
  • Can hook up an external hard drive to watch films etc on the TV
    Exclusive games Killzone2, resistance, uncharted

I enjoy playing both the x-box has nice meaty controllers, but al in all there isnt a whole pile of difference, I would like to have both to be honest.
My advice? if you have friends with a console, buy what they have, going online with them is the best craic.
Going online is the only reason to play these games.
Buying these games and then just playing locally and not going online would be like bringing a hooker back to the house then jsut chatting.
It’s just a waste.

 Online play is the dogs, and that is why I purchased an Xbox 360 in the first place. The analogy sucks though (figuratively and possibly literally).

You can get 1 years Gold membership (Xbox Live) for about 35. I never play wirelessly but I have a Homeplug setup which is super. Means I can play in any room in the house as long as there is a power outlet in the room. Wired speed and reliability with most of the flexibility of Wireless.

What is the homeplug set up shadow? can you put up a link to one on komplett or something?

Fixed that for you…

Shadow is not to be trusted. While everyone else is running around maps getting killed, Shadow will get in behind a rock/tree/truck/wall and bring you down to chinatown in silence. Shadow is an apt name.

It’s a pity Shadow is not my gamertag, unfortunately it was taken already.

There’s a lot of info on the http://www.homeplug.org/ site.

Most of the major players make options now. Komplett only have 1 (http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=502908) and that’s looks too pricey. Expansys looks to have a much better selection (http://www.expansys.ie/desktop-computing/networking/homeplug+powerline).

However I got mine at Solwise (http://www.solwise.co.uk/). I got a pair of 85 Mbps plugs (http://www.solwise.co.uk/net-powerline-pl-85pe.htm). With sterling so low, it’s a very good option.

In addition to those I still use my older 10 Mbps plugs alongside the newer ones. I got them years ago in PC World.

85 Mbps is fine for most things, even 10 Mbps is fine for normal networking. Its only if you wanted to do serious AV streaming then you might want to go for the 200 Mbps option.

I got this in Tesco on Tuesday €44, fantastic game, I liked the first 1, I prefer this 1

In regards to the whole 360 vs. PS3 debate, I have both and prefer the 360, more choice of games, online is great, sky player is great, if it had bluray it would be ideal, but as it is I just copy movies to a usb key and play through the xbox anyway.
This is a step by step guide to setting the PS3 up to the internet, it just makes sure you have the correct NAT type, otherwise online gaming wont work properly and will wreck your head.

All presuming you are with Eircom broadband

go on to your screen with all the different options (like game, video, music etc)

go to the second icon SETTINGS

Scroll down to the last option NETWORK SETTINGS and open it
Go to the third icon here INTERNET CONNECTION SETTINGS and open it
Select a setting method select CUSTOM
Select WIRELESS
Select Scan (it should pick up your router automatically from here)
Hit enter
Press right on the keypad
It will now ask you for your WLAN Security Settings, enter the WEP or WPA key
I use the WPA key, it is a 20 digit code i got from eircom, a mixture of letters and numbers, called the WPA key, you should be able to find it by typing 192.168.1.254 into the internet explorer address bar and then look under the wireless section.

Enter in the twenty digit number
The next page is IP Address Settings, Choose PPPoE
Enter in the PPPoE User Name which is eircom@eircom.net
Enter in the PPoE password which is broadband1
The next page is DNS settings, choose AUTOMATIC
The next page is MTU, Choose AUTOMATIC
the next page is Proxy server, Choose DO NOT USE,
The next page is UPnP, Choose ENABLE
Press the x button to save settings
press the x button to test connection.

the test should tell you have NAT type 1, just stick in the game and go to community
You should be good to go feen
Did that but it said timed out after failing to find the IP adress?

I made the plunge and bought an Xbox 360 this afternoon and got Fifa 2010 and Halo 3 with it…Fairly impressed with it so far…If only there was broadband in Clonlara I would be elected…

Once you go online your life will change. I spend far too much time onilne playing games.
Then again, with Modern Warfare2 I’m not playing well so may give it a break.
Halo3 is a good game. You’ll enjoy that.

i didnt have that problem and dont know that much about it, i found the below on afterdawn.com, hope it helps.

PUTTING YOUR PS3 IN A DMZ

Firstly you may be wondering what a DMZ is, this stands for a demilitarised zone. it really means that rather than opening just one port on your routers firewall you are actually opening every single one. Port opening is another simple process, however it takes a bit of time to find exactly what ports need opening, and sometimes, the ports listed may not solve the problem you have

Putting your PS3 into a DMZ is not a bad thing, and is much easier than opening port for the reason listed above.

Now you may need to do this for some of the following reasons:

  • Not being able to join rooms
  • Not being able to speak over headset
  • Not being able to hear over headset
  • Not being able to join games which are hosted by certain people
  • Any problems to do with connectivity to the PSN or game specific servers, especially if your computer will connect to the internet, but PS3 won’t.
  • Problems with media servers

Now on with the guide.

The Guide!

To put your PS3 into a DMZ (To be done on the PS3 Console)

Firstly, you will need to assign your PS3 a static internal Ip address. This means that everytime your PS3 connects or “talks” to your router, the router will assign it a different internal IP address. These IP addresses typically run in series. So for example, if your PS3 is the second device communicating with your router, then it will be assigned an ip address of 192.168.1.3. However, if you choose to use your PS3 without the computer being on, the assigned IP address your PS3 has will be 192.168.1.2. As this is different, and obviously will change, it would be stupid setting a DMZ up on one of the above Ip addresses, unless your PS3 was the only device that would ALWAYS connect using that specific IP.

To make sure that your PS3 is always assigned the same internal IP address by your router, you will need to go to the “Settings > Network Settings > Internet Connection Settings” option on the PS3 Cross bar menus.

You will be presented with an option which primarily asks whether you are using a Wired or Wireless connection. Obviously, you will choose the option which refers to you. If choosing the Wireless option you will need to input the security details in use on your router If you are not currently using wireless security, i strongly reccommend you do so ASAP

Both selections should show a page called “Address Settings”. Here you will need to select “Custom”. Another page will then display entitled “IP Address Setting”. The option “Manual” will need to be selected.

This will display a page where customisable IP Addresses are available to be selected.

IP Address - This will need to have the Static IP address in it. Personally, i use 192.168.1.100. I use this because it is extremely unlikely my Router will ever automatically assign this IP Address to a device, as i will never have 99 other devices connected to the same system.

Subnet Mask - Is always set to 255.255.255.0

Default Router - Is the internal IP Address of your router.
To get the exact ip of your router you should go to
Start
Run
cmd [Hit Enter]
Type in ipconfig and hit enter, this should come up with all the ip addresses to do with your computer and the network. The address you will need to enter in this option is listed as “Default Gateway”.

Primary DNS - Same IP Address as “Default Router”

Secondary DNS - Same IP Address as “Default Router”

After entering all of these IP Addresses, you will now click “Enter” or hit the “right” button on the D-Pad. This will take you to a screen which says “MTU” at the top. My setup has this as Automatic, solely because i haven’t a clue what MTU actually means or does. This won’t affect your ability to set up a DMZ.

The next steps are very simple. You do not want to use a proxy server unless you connect to the internet using one, however i can be of no help there, and you should enable UPnP if your router supports it.

To put your PS3 into a DMZ (To be done on the PC)

Now head over to your PC, and load up your internet browser. In the Address Bar, type the IP Address of your router (the one you found using the Command Prompt earlier)

This will take you to your Router Configuration Page.

Every router interface differs from an other, and depending on what router firmware update you last installed, router interfaces can differ, even on the same model routers. This means that you will need to search the router config page yourself. You are looking for any mention of “DMZ” or “DMZ Host”

When you have found this, it will ask you generally to input the IP Address of your DMZ Host, which is just the static IP address you assigned to your PS3 earlier, my example was 192.168.1.100, so we’ll stick with that. Then click “apply” or similar.

You should then turn off everything running on your home network. PS3, PC, Router etc. This is solely to make sure that the changes are applied as soon as possible.

This should fix all of the problems as listed earlier in this guide, and probably some other issues.

If you have any questions, please list them in this thread, and we will endeavour to answer them as quickly as possible.

Why the need for a static IP address?

I once had static on a jumper.
It was tingly.

Anyone ever bought a console or accessories in Hong Kong? Heading there next week and might pick up something if it’s worth the hassle. Should be a decent saving over Dublin I reckon.

heard an offer on the radion last night about an xbox for 150 if you buy halo, fifa10 and modern warfare2 with it. seemed a decent enough deal as they’d be top game to be getting with it anyway. I’d say all the accessories and stuff in HK would be cheap tho.
