As a KK man and a GAA man, I feel insult Dennis Joseph Carey has not asked me for money. Feels like it was a symbol of status to be asked. I’m a nobody.
You’re being hard on yourself there. Maybe he thought you had money but also thought you were an awful cunt that wouldn’t give him a cent.
PROMINENT figures from GAA and television yesterday ducked for cover when asked to comment on their involvement in a rally supporting fallen tycoon Sean Quinn.
Mr Quinn appeared before a crowd of 4,000 who had gathered in his Ballyconnell heartland on Sunday to protest at the treatment of a man who created thousands of jobs in their area and was always generous to the local community.
Tyrone football boss Mickey Harte, Meath legend Colm O’Rourke, All-Ireland winning Armagh boss Joe Kernan and Fr Brian D’Arcy all addressed the crowd and declared their support for Mr Quinn.
However, all four yesterday failed to return calls and emails asking for comments on why they had attended the event. Former Meath boss Sean Boylan, who also addressed the rally, was at a family funeral and could not comment.
Separately, Fine Gael MEP and former GAA president Sean Kelly took to his local radio station to praise the people of Ballyconnell for coming out in support of the Quinns.
“I can understand why they’re doing it, we’d probably be doing the exact same thing down here in Kerry,” he told Radio Kerry.
“If somebody who was very loyal to us . . . was having difficulties we’d probably say listen, while things are difficult for you at the moment, we’ll give you moral support.”
Mr Kelly could not be reached for further comment last night.
But a spokesman for Fine Gael said the comments were Mr Kelly’s “own opinion”.
“The party’s view is still that the judicial process should be observed,” the spokesman said, pointing out that Mr Kelly also respected the judicial process.
The high-profile guests were invited to Sunday’s event because organisers wanted to convince the “Dublin media” and others beyond the immediate area that there were genuine concerns about what was happening to the Quinns.
Is that Jarley Burns there on the left?
I think it is. Elected President of the GAA last night.
That’s not a great look for the association.
Davy Fitz has had a fair few bank run ins as well hasn’t he?
A very bad look for the GAA. Has the new President distanced himself from his previous comments on this?

GAA star Jarlath Burns says he still supports Sean Quinn.
In a tweet to this newspaper, the former Armagh GAA captain said: “Yes, I still support him. I believe him and I trust him. Simple as that.”
Mr. Burns and a number of GAA personalities, including Mickey Harte, Joe Kernan and Colm O’Rourke spoke at a rally in support of the former Fermanagh businessman back in July, but were criticised for doing so.
“Tonight we are coming together and like the founders of the GAA there is no power like the power of the people,” Jarlath Burns told the crowd in Ballyconnell.
Commentators moved quickly to criticise Mr. Burns and the others and the backlash that followed resulted in the GAA issuing a statement to deny it had an active role in the event for Sean Quinn and his family.
The organisation said that individual members were permitted to have their own views on issues but added that as an association “it would be entirely inappropriate for the GAA to become involved in matters outside its remit”.
It is not known if Mr. Burns or anyone else from the GAA world will attend the second Pro-Quinn rally, which is scheduled to return to Ballyconnell next Sunday.
Sure I’ve been calling croke park out for ages and got a torrent of abuse on here.
Lads think they put the split season in place for the good of the clubs. They did in their eye. They done it to coin it in from the inter county game.
At croke park level it’s a pretty rotten organisation.
Minister Neale Richmond showing real and decisive leadership on this one. He has called for relevant personnel from AIB to be hauled before the Public Accounts Committee to explain their actions.
You might as well be looking for the snowman the kids built last year……
At this stage you can only think they should disband the GAA and bring it under the substantially cleaner auspices of the IRFU
You’d wonder at the shady deals done to get an Armagh man in before a straight up sort like Teehan
Isn’t Jarlath Burns some sort of hardcore Catholic, gaa fundamentalist?
Almost certainly.
A perfect fit for a backward organisation like the gah
He’d be the first Armagh gaa man not to be if he’s not
I’d say he’s worn scapulars in his day
There’s Armagh lads with scapulars of Jarly Burns on them
