More Rugby Shame

The answer 13 months.

Former rugby international Brendan Mullin was released from prison three months ago, having served just 13 months of his three-year jail sentence.

Mullin (62) stole hundreds of thousands of euro from Bank of Ireland Private Bank when he was its managing director between 2011 and 2013.

He was arrested in 2021 and jailed for three years in November 2024 after being found guilty of stealing more than €567,000 on dates between 2011 and 2013, as well as false accounting. The jury returned guilty verdicts in 12 of the 14 charges against him following the trial.

The Sunday Independent understands that within a couple of weeks of his imprisonment, Mullin was transferred from Mountjoy Prison to Shelton Abbey — the low-security open prison in Co Wicklow.

Criminals deemed low-risk are also often housed at open prisons where they enjoy much greater freedom than prisoners at closed jails.

Last December, after serving just 13 months, the former rugby international was permanently released under the Community Return Scheme. Under this scheme, Mullin — of Stillorgan Road, Donnybrook, Dublin 4 — is obliged to carry out community service three days a week until his sentence is completed.

Prisons across the State have been overcrowded for some time

He must also sign on at a prison of his choosing once a week.

With remission, Mullin would have been automatically entitled to 25pc off his sentence, as is every prisoner. This meant he was due to be released in February 2027, had he not been released early.

Fair enough really. Unlikely to reoffend you’d imagine. Unlikely to get the opportunity to anyway

I agree.

The solution to overcrowded prisons is to let all the middle class white collar criminals out while keeping the scrotes likely to reoffend inside.

Wonder did he return the dough with interest?

I think all the money was returned long before the trial started.

Everyone should get one go at white collar crime. Great that he was out for Sixmas.

This ‘Live and Let Live’ demeanour sits in stark contrast to your feelings with regard to association football fans who mightnt make the game tomorrow…

He was a prince of a centre. I wouldn’t afford the same leniency to Ham and Eggers like Leo Cullen or Guy Easterby

Jeez I wouldn’t dream of jailing you and your peers from staying home from the match. I just think it would disappoint what appears to be a gallant group of players

I wont be staying home, as you know Gil. I go to all* the matches with my 2 kids. It’s great craic. It’s the lads that dont know their Donnybrooks from their Donnycarneys, and their Donnycarneys from their Artanes you want to be getting onto. I dearly hope they wont be doing a munster on it and turnout for the team.

It was only resting in his account ?

the LOI are too dogmatic with the Friday games, they should mix them up a bit

If only there was another 20 or 30 thousand like you we might fill the national stadium for the soccer more often

National stadium?

Or if we can tap into the record 2.6m that watched the game last week

The average crowd is shameful when you put it like that
