MSFC Final - Cork v. Kerry

As ever the closer you get the more you start to cod yourself.

But, and this is a huge but, that’s arguably the most talented 15 Cork have started with in a couple of years. Where their heads are at is the major question for them. I would like to think all they are worried about is performance and concentrating on their own game, whatever game that is. In reality it’s 30/70 them winning. I would hope they embrace that from the start and take the hand break off and just play.

They’ll lose by 8-10 Kev.

Kerry full back line looks really bad, you imagine if they can get early ball into O’Neill and Hurley then they can cause problems. Remains to be seen if Kerry will line up to give it added protection. Don’t know much about that Cork half back line.

I’ll go with a narrow Kerry win.

Kerry on the other hand have decided to reward training form and club form and also throw down the gauntlet to older stars that the past is the past. Long term this will have great benefits one would think, however Sunday they are giving Cork a sniff of it.

Moran back is huge though. He is Alan O Connor with skills and adds so much to Kerry. And Kerry have decided clearly at midfield to try and make it as wide and as “footballing” as possible to elevate any influence AOC may have.

I think Cork h-t Kerry f-t is a bet here. I expect the bench to finish off the job for Kerry but Cork to get a lot from the game.

Who was Tadgh MacCarthaigh?

Barry O Driscoll is Nemo and has normally operated at 13/14 and occasionally 10. Was the most talented player around coming out of minor but had an injury and just didn’t seem to be liked by managements. Always felt there was too many left footed corner men and they needed to try some elsewhere. He has played as a 3rd midfielder and a sweeper very occasionally other than the Clare game. Serious talent, just hard to know if he has defensive skills.

Brian O Driscoll - the best of the 3 O Driscoll brothers. Very tough with a great engine and skills. More like a traditional nordie half back or a throw back to Conor Counihan/Mick Slocum. Could be a star, top 3/4 player in Sigerson for last 2 years.

Stephan Cronin also Nemo - normally when I saw him he was in the corner. He is a real step away from Corks recent selection policy as he is small. Hard to know what height, but possibly as small as 5’7. Extremely fast, excellent ball carrier but, obviously enough, prone to being cleaned out by long accurate kickouts. Great to see him play though, a real ball player.

Blessed Thaddeus MacCarthy

(Tadhg MacCarthaigh)

Thaddeus was born in 1455 in Caheragh near the old Caheragh Monastery or Bishopland area, his father’s identity is unknown, however, he is claimed as one of the McCarthy Reagh Family. He studied abroad and in Rome in 1482, aged only 26, Pope Sixtus IV, appointed him Bishop of Ross.

Thaddeus came home to Ireland to find that Hugh O’Driscoll had been appointed Bishop of Ross. Hugh O’Driscoll travelled to Rome to denounce the new Bishop and succeeded in having him removed as Bishop of Ross. Thaddeus continued to uphold his claim and after an independent inquiry Pope Innocent VIII declared Hugh O’Driscoll to be the legitimate Bishop of Ross by prior appointment. Two years later, in 1490, Thaddeus was appointed by Pope Innocent VIII as Bishop of Cork & Cloyne on the resignation of William Roche. Unfortunately, political forces opposed his appointment and Thaddeus was forced to return to Rome to sort out the difficulties. The Pope clearly established Thaddeus as the Bishop of Ross.

On his return journey home, Thaddeus travelled as an ordinary pilgrim. One night he sheltered in a pilgrim’s hospice and in the morning a bright light was seen to shine from his room. It was found that Thaddeus had died during the night and the light was light flickering flames coming from his body and the bed he was lying on. On examining his belongings they realised that he was a Bishop and crowds started to gather. It is said that several people were miraculously cured. His body was taken away and brought to the Cathedral to lie in state. He was buried under the altar of St. Eusebius in Ivrea Cathedral.

Many people claim to have been cured by Thaddeus and when his tomb was opened in 1742, 300 years after his death, his body was found to be completely preserved. Pope Leo XIII declared him Blessed on 14th. September 1896. Relics were brought back by the Bishops and are kept in the Cathedrals in Cork and Cloyne.

A special chapel is dedicated to Blessed Thaddeus in Cobh Cathedral along with highlights of his life. A statue of Thaddeus stands at the centre of the altar. A casket underneath contains his relics. On the floor is the coat of arms of Bishop John McCarthy with the Latin inscription: “Blessed Thaddeus, Bishop of Cloyne 1490-92.”
