I donāt think this tracks. It was announced he was joining Munster in January 2017, the crime was March 2017. I doubt theyād have been able to tear up the contract at that stage, it took years later for him to even be charged.
Youāre working off two assumptions here
- That MP would have stayed as no 2
- That Munster wanted him to remain as no 2
Costello is not the DOR. His title is General Manager
I doubt he has any input on the senior coaching approach
I donāt think those things are mutually exclusive to what I said. If they give McMillan the call on bringing in his own guys whoās been his main coaching partner that he was likely to bring in, the rapey guy. Itās not like this wasnāt in clear view.
Iām not disagreeing with that. It was clear he was gonna bring in his own staff. My point is Munster clearly hired him knowing that and probably fully aligned to that
Agree, my point is that that was stupid.
He was hired at short enough notice last season id say was a calculated gamble rightly or wrongly
I could easily have had it arseways too
Is DoR more rugby operations, long-term strategy, recruitment, player development pathways, coaching structures across all levels? Thatās basically Costelloās brief as I understand it. No?
Most DOR roles are effectively running the senior team wherever they are. That is not the case in Munster
I think you did but you said it with great authority so I was fairly nodding along in agreement til I checked.
Wasnāt my understanding but perhaps Iām incorrect. Always thought Head coach runs the senior team and Director of rugby is the broader brief with player development etc. Any examples?
Iāll be upskilled for the next off the field disgrace in Irish rubby.
Mark McCall
Phil Dowson at noton
Donāt think any of the Irish provinces have a DORā¦
Rory Best is Costello equivalent in Ulster for e.g. but very clear to all who runs the senior side
Iām fairly certain Leo Cullen is a DOR. Nienbar is a head coach.
Depends on what the convenient narrative isā¦
It was Cullen down on the sideline in extra time v Toulouse and he has emphasised him being the head coach many times.
Youād wonder why the Munster lads who were happy to spend money on overseas players wouldnāt pool together to get OāGara. I actually think there would be fairly demonstrable ROI for Munster to do it themselves actually as I think heād drive a lot of ticket sales.
Nienbar corrected a journalist in a presser recently and said heās the head of the rugby programme.
Iām pretty sure thatās what the irfu want in all the provinces since humphries came in.
Iāve heard contradicting things at various times. Ultimately the title is head coach, which Iād agree is bizarre.
