Tipp have named the exact same team as v Limerick?

Bar the sending off, Cork would have beaten Clare last weekend. They’ll throw the kitchen sink at limerick next Saturday. It’s far from a done deal.
Hmmm, I’m not sure on that. Leaving that game the aul fella (who is one of the most critical fuckers in the world when it comes to Waterford hurling) turned to me and says “We weren’t off today”.
As an aside, I got burnt alive in the open stand that day, so much so that one of the girls in work saw fit to bring in exfoliating cream on the following Wednesday or Thursday as my forehead was peeling so badly.
Good days!
Watching back the second half of Clare cork here from last weekend. A few observations from that half.
I hadn’t realised that after being 7 down after 39 they had it back to one point by the 44 minute. Hadn’t realised we reeled them in so quickly.
I have no idea what happened Eoin Downey for the first goal, previous passage of play was ball into top of the left that McCarthy and him overran. Keeper hits a terrible ball straight to Davy Mc. McCarthy is on his own in 20 yards of space to the left of SOD and Clare have a 3v2 which Rodgers buried. Can’t tell from the tv but it’s like Downey went tearing up the field for some reason.
His brother’s lack of effort and Luke Meade’s lack of effort for the second and third goals were really poor, both gave up. Contrast that to Conlon and David Mc bursting their bollocks to pressure Barrett into a one handed swipe. Both cork lads could have gotten back to get pressure in the strike with a bit more effort.
Conlon’s use of the ball for the most part was excellent.
Brian Hayes had one clean possession and Dalton zero before being replaced.
Cork forwards don’t force turnovers, Hogan’s miscontrol at the start of the half and Conlon’s sloppy hand pass to Malone which led to the free which Horgan goaled were the only two dispossessions Corks forwards generated in the half and both were unforced. David Reidy had more in the second half than the 9 cork forwards who saw the pitch in the half
Think Cork only scored 3 points from play at most after the 1-1 by Horgan and Harnedy straight after HT up until Downey’s goal in injury time.
Ryan and Rodgers points to push us 5 up after Horgan’s frees were class scores.
Yes yes, glory to Clare and yet ye only won by two points.
Were it not for the red card, it could have been a very different ending. Up until that point, Cork were the better team in my opinion.
Harder to dispossess opposition defenders when a man down.
An injury time goal and a opportunistic free from Horgan puts a better complexion on it for Cork - and that’s not even mentioning the Reidy/Shanagher chance at the very end that was at worst a 21 but more likely a penalty.
I’d suggest you watch the 15 minutes or so before the sending off after Cork’s early run of scores. Ye barely had a shot at the posts from open play in that time.
Yet for the third quarter when then had 15 they couldn’t muster it
A 15 minute spell in which Clare were on top. Of course they were going to have a purple patch at some stage soon after Cork went 7 up. These are two very evenly matched teams, both playing very well. As such, it was a real seesaw game.
The nature of the game changed dramatically because of the sending off. Fitzgerald started hurling all of a sudden. Conlon started sweeping up more ball and Clare really took command.
I’m not at all sayinv that Clare didn’t deserve it - we all know they did.
It’s a bit strange to harp on about who did what on the Clare side versus the Cork side the Friday after the game.
Cork should have won that game, Clare are a super team but their Achilles heel is their full back line and goalkeeper.
Cork have been absolutely fucked by poor reffing decisions this year so far, both games calls went against them that were harsh that may have had an impact on the result. Regardless they still havent performed tp their ability either
They certainly did not perform to ability against Waterford.
However, I was proud of the effort against a very very good Clare team. I thought they gave it fucking everything in fairness. But they can definitely improve.
Conlon was actually more prominent before the sending off than after it. He looked fairly leggy in the last 10. The lazy hand pass to Malone which led to the second goal typified this - a real tired ball under no pressure.
He set up the first goal and both of David Reidy’s points early in the second half with excellent balls out of defence and also made a couple of big covering tackles when 15v15
Ethan Twomey ended up beside McCarthy on the first goal when Collins played the ball out, then rushes up the field but E.Downey never goes back in, leaving it 3v2 inside. O’Donnell then takes about 10 steps before playing the ball to Rodgers. Rodgers takes 8 or 9 in the buildup to the O’Donoghue sending off. David Fitz scores 1-1 with TOM on the ground. Clare were the far better team but a few things went their way as well.
Watching it back, Shane Barrett had a disaster of a second half where he keeps spilling the ball. Ryan blows him out the way like he was a child after the sideline in the corner. He was probably knackered tbf, all the half forward have huge crossfield sprints to do on puckouts and they’re still isolated if they manage to catch the puckout.
Ye are certainly successful at that.
Yeah it is a better strategy in theory than practice. In championship hurling your not going to get space to run onto those balls and they suddenly go from high to low percentage if there is no separation. Collins wasn’t exactly giving them favourable ball either.
I thought Barrett put in a decent shift but the ball never stuck for him.
I dunno. You cant write off Tipp in a game like this. Its an AI for them in many respects. They will improve.
And last year is an extra hook for them
Yep . Word is they’re very fresh after not bothering their holes for the last 25 minutes on Sunday.
I suppose we won’t know if Cork would have won if they did not have a player sent off; that said, however, there’s a fair few Cork supporters convinced they would have won while conveniently ignoring the fact that Clare had hauled back Cork’s seven point lead to one point and were well on top prior to the sending off (and, in fact, leveled the match with the subsequent free, which at the very minimum it was).
Cahill was at pains to say in his postmatch interview there would be changes. He was really sellling the story that he couldn’t put his finger on why the team didn’t play well. But he didn’t sound overly bothered at all.
