Smashing player. He eventually hit a level that many would have thought was above his ceiling. Tipp definitely could have done with him to help out bonnar maher.
Wasnât good enough for us truth be told. Would have struggled to make a 26.
Hard disagree. In his early days that was true but in later seasons he reached a level that would have definitely seen him start for tipp. There was a period there where OâDwyer was a really good all round forward and ball winner while tipp were fielding at least four lads that were standing around waiting for bonnar maher to win them a ball.
Itâs all timing in sport, when he was breaking into the team we had Bonnar who was an animal with Gar Ryan & John o brien who were well able to mix it and much better hurlers than ROD.
When Ryan & O brien were done then ROD would have been an option although his plastic Hurley would have been an eye soar in the middle of all the snipers.
Agreed. The shapers in cooper helmets could certainly have done with OâDwyer to win ball and pass it off to them.
Heâd hardly be fit to hurl with Tipp now
Ye just donât get it.
In all seriousness, he has probably wasnât good enough when he needed to be.
Agree to disagree, there was a period of a few years where heâd absolutely have started for tipp. Of course, had he remained with tipp he probably wouldnât have been involved with the county and wouldnât have reached that level. Nonetheless the point remains.
No he wouldnât.
Who does he displace from that forward line from 2014 All Ireland?
G Ryan (0-01), L Corbett (0-02), Patrick Maher (1-01); J OâDwyer (0-07, 2f), S Callanan (0-07, 2f), N McGrath (0-04).
There wasnât.
Maybe an auld Waterford league game or something.
Two fine willing runners in midfield too.
Poor auld Mikey Cahill had to come on MF with Woodlock going half forward I think. Kelly, Forde and JOB the other forward changes
If he was good enough to hurl with Tipp when they were All Ireland contenders, heâd have fucking hurled with Tipp
OâDwyer had discipline issues too with his abrasive style and awkward tackling technique. Didnât he get sent off in the AISF in 2013 when the game was in the melting pot?
He was always good to concede 3 or 4 frees a game
If I recall correctly he was having a great game that day, possibly the best player in the pitch
Cork were there for the taking and that was a mediocre Clare team standing in the feat of an All Ireland
Two yellows wasnât it? Wrongful sending off I always thought. That looked like Limerick or Dublinâs year. Sliding doors.
Clare would have beaten Dublin by a good six or seven points.
That Dublin team were as inconsistent as youâll ever see at that level. Knocked out by Antrim in 2010, then very close to Tipp in the 2011 AI semi. Truly awful in 2012, then beating KK and winning Leinster in 2013.
Clare came good that year and would have won easily I agree. TK/Galvin/SOD/Podge Collins were so young and unexposed they wouldnât have been stopped.
Dublin winning Leinster was their ceiling.
A Dublin-Limerick final would have been epic. Think Limerick would have found a way to lose it.
Cork stuck in those finals because they were Cork and Clare were Clare.
Clare were a good eight or nine points the better team the first day. They were probably around six points a better team the second day and indeed the final margin was six but it was a chaotic and utterly panicky six points which only became six with the last puck of the ball.
Dublin possibly could or should have beaten Cork but they didnât because they were Dublin and Cork were Cork.
Dubin inter-county hurling teams donât do All-Ireland finals at any level.
