Shanahan would have been under 10 playing those games as he is a year or two younger than those lads.
Unfortunately like a lot of lads who play 3 years or more at county minor they are half broken up by the time they get out if under 21s. Darach Honan was the same. Shanahanās back has been an issue since his last year of minor. A wonderful stickman
Another lad Davy did no favours to. Bringing him straight in at 19 and making him free taker and giving him loads of gametime and before he had earned it. The likes of Malone, Daire Keane, Peter Duggan and Shanahan left kicking their heels on the extended panel between 2014 and 2016 and we crying out for bigger men in the middle third but instead he parachuted Bobby in before he was ready.
Still playing for Clarecastle. Was in the panel in 2017 under D&G and again in spring if last year under Lohan but was cut by both fairly early. Just doesnāt seem to have the mentality to compete physically or do the hard graft you need to do at I/C level.
I think Waterford are better than the same of their parts, Cahill did an amazing job last year and will have improved the team again (albeit theyāre weakened big time by the injries). Havenāt seen any of Clare in the league though so havenāt a clue about them. Expect Waterford to win.
Waterford missing their first choice ākeeper, full back, centre back and midfielder. If Clare canāt give this a good rattle they can forget about it.
Clare losing to Antrim was a disaster but they definitely look to have improved on last year. Diarmuid Ryan back to wing-back is a good move, heās better than anybody they had there last year. Colm Galvin is back, a serious player. Shanagher is in form. John Conlon has done a job at centre-back.
Maybe that will be exposed in Championship; and there are certainly doubts about the full-back line but they look to be in a better position than last year.
I would still fancy Waterford but the injuries levels things out quite a bit.
Both teams have 6 or 7 changes from last year, Iād argue that aside from David Mcinerney who may well start the rest of the changes strengthen Clare compared to last year or at worse, they are teplacing players of a similar standard. Waterford are probably better to have Fives and the other Bennett back but are most definitely weaker in four key positions compared to last year.
The gap from last year will be closed, whether it is closed enough for Clare to capitalise is the question
Bobby treats hurling like a game he loves playing rather than the ridiculous commitment required of amateur players these days in an IC set up. Better free taker than Kelly even but I donāt think heād add anything to current panel tbh
