Munster SHC Final 2017 - Clare v Cork

Were you at the game

Makes sense. Hard to judge any player when a team isn’t unified and management isn’t getting the best out of them.

In terms of comparing the two of them at the same age, he certainly doesn’t.

The ability to “go through people” is vastly overrated as an attribute.

I did in 1992 and I don’t really have much intention of doing so again. That match was a damp squib with Tipperary miles behind their 1991 level, and very forgettable compared to the 1987, 1990 and 1991 fireworks between the teams.

How many championship matches did they win between, say, 1990 and 1993 inclusive?

Not many is the answer.

They were well behind both Cork and Tipperary in that period.

The Cork lads seem to be incredibly well coached. No one taking on stupid shots, everyone getting the head up and playing in lovely low and diagonal ball.

Clare seemed to have a shoot-on-sight policy and could have not bothered with a full forward line. Their only tactic in defence was to foul repeatedly.

A bit like Tipp and Waterford this year?

With Charleville finally making a positive contribution to Cork hurling, I’ll let that one slide for the day that’s in it.

Tipperary’s performance against Cork this year was a hell of a lot better than their performance in the 1992 clash.

In 1992 they fell 8 points behind early in the second half and only a very late goal made the scoreline respectable in what was a poor, low scoring match.

Cork have beaten two teams with genuine All-Ireland pedigree and another with All-Ireland potential this year.

You’re being selective. How many championship matches did they win between 92 and 96. More than Tipp and Cork. Fuck sake. Ypu can make the same argument about Tipp between 71 and 87. Kilkenny 83 to 92 or even Cork 90 to 99

I’ll take your word for it…

Fuck sake don’t start polluting the hurling threads with your internet researched bullshit.

Definitely not. It creates space for lads to look up for in the backs and creates goal chances in the forwards

I’m not being selective at all. I’m recognising that there’s a big difference between winning a league title and doing it in the championship.

As I said, in 1992 Limerick were not a top tier hurling county. Their performances in the championship around this time bear this out, beating only very poor Clare and Waterford teams once each between 1991 and 1993 and being soundly beaten by Cork and Tipperary, as well as Clare in 1993. They had some good young players like Ciaran Carey and Gary Kirby but overall they simply weren’t at that top level at that point in time.

It took the decline of the Cork and Tipperary teams of the early 90s and two more years of improvement for Limerick for them to emerge in 1994.

Not INTERNET-researched and not bullshit.

Compared to the attributes Coleman has it’s most certainly overrated, and particularly in his position. Waterford for instance had numerous lads who could “go through” you and did against Cork but they didn’t do very much when they did. Similarly with Clare today, they had lads like Conor Cleary and Cathal Malone who could easily “go through you” but neither have a tenth of the hurling skill or the hurling brain Coleman has.

Ah stop. You’d totally forgotten about Brian Corcoran when making the big statement about Coleman. And you’re now distorting reality to make the argument work.

This is important. It’s not lefty politics.

OK, m8.

Coleman hasn’t even played a senior championship game in Croke Park but already he’s being compared to Brian Corcoran ffs.

He’s a very good player but I think someone like Brick Walsh could pose him problems with his awkwardness.

So you’re basically saying that any championship match not won by Kilkenny, Cork or Tipp was not won by a top tier county.

We’re not m8s, pal.
