Munster Under-21 Hurling

Waterords 1992 team is the one that sticks out. You have to take out the big county attitude here Mullach, i’d be guilty of it myself sometimes, but one victory like last year can set up a county like Clare. I know your going to throw the Limerick thing back, but they had too many dual players, a retarded board and some heavy drinkers on the team.

Corks wins in 97&98 were huge for us, even though we’d be considered a big county. If we won’t it this year we’d be flying from it. An U-21 for KK or Tipp at the moment would go under the radar, as everyone knows the strength of the hurlers they have. It will mean different things to different counties at different times.

Personally i think the MInor should go to U-19, then i’d be agreeing with you.

On wednesday, that Minor match has no bearing on it at all. Cork are down player firstly, and secondly the Tipp lads are far more developed than some of ours, even to look at physically. We have a tall enough team, but Tipp have powerful players.

I’ll go down anyway wednesday and have a look.

Take Waterford’s 1992 team so, it took them ten years to win a Munster Final after that.
Take all Galway’s success at U21 level.
Tipp won 3 in a row 79,80,81 again in 85, it still took them till 89 to win an AI.
While success in any grade is good for a county, you could argue Clare’s success in the Junior in 93 was a factor in their breakthrough in 95, I still think that U21 is over-stated.
Tipp U-21’s will suffer this year due to so many of them being involved in the Senior, the Cork team with no Senior starters or big stars could still be more of a “team” than Tipp.

Now if you have a team that wins AI at Minor and then goes on to win at U-21 as well, then you obviously have a special crop coming through - Tipp Minors 82 won U-21 in 85.

Limerick was the easy one, there would be no point in going there.

Its not just that particular crop though Mullach, the '92 win for waterford started a trend that is even only really coming to the fore now. An U-21 for Clare or waterford or Wexford has a much more overall affect on hurling in the county than it does in the big 3, usually. From a Minor team you can lose so many, and the reason a guy was good as a Minor can change so dramatically to even U-21. If you have good U-21’s they are more likely (but nonetheless not definite) better built for Senior. I also believe though that Fitzgibbon far outweighs any of them, but not everyone gets to play that.

You could be right on that bolded part of course, and if Cork weren’t missing who they were missing i’d be hoping to win wednesday. But its hard to see at this time. The shooting the last day, against a brutal Waterford performance, from some of the guys who will be playing wednesday wouldn’t win a junior game, thats the truth. That won’t do against Tipp.

But thats the norm Mullach, Corks late 90’s win was a huge shock, and their natural progression saw them win in '04 & '05.

apparantly this is the Tipp team for wednesday:

WHAT a difference a year makes. Twelve months ago, as Clare finalised preparations for the opening round of the Munster U-21 Hurling Championship against Limerick at Cusack Park, there were hopes that the long wait for honours at this level could finally be ended. Yet followers were conscious of the many disappointments teams had suffered at this level over the previous 40 years.
History now shows that Clare won the Munster and All-Ireland titles in impressive fashion in 2009, so both titles will be on the line when they make the short journey to the Gaelic Grounds in Limerick next Wednesday next (throw in at 7.30pm) for their first game in the 2010 race.
Clare go into the tie with seven of the starting line-up from last September’s All-Ireland final win over Kilkenny available for selection, together with a further six players who played at some stage in last year’s memorable campaign.
“We really don’t know much about Limerick but the word is that they are much stronger than they were 12 months ago. Like ourselves, they have a number of players who are in their senior squad,” commented Clare manager John Minogue this week.
The Clare survivors from last year are Nicky O’Connell, Donal Tuohy, James Gunning, John Conlon, Darach Honan, Caimin Morey and Sean Collins, while Conor McGrath, Patrick O’Connor, Eoin Hayes, Cathal Chaplin, Liam Markham and Cillian Duggan all played at some stage in last year’s campaign.
Minogue says form doesn’t mean much when Clare and Limerick meet in any hurling championship tie.
“There is never anything between Clare and Limerick and at U-21 level, Clare haven’t a good record at the Gaelic Grounds. The opportunity to dethrone Clare is sure to be a huge motivation for Limerick,” he said.
He acknowledged, “Public expectation is high but things are a little different this year. Last year, we had most of the lads training with us all of the time. This year we really haven’t had the senior lads except for a recent challenge with Galway. When we line out on Wednesday, it will only be the second time that we will have had the full squad together and that doesn’t help. It is a disadvantage but it’s the same for other counties.”
Minogue added, “We have a lot of new people in the panel this year. Last year, there were a lot there from the previous year so we had a more settled group. It’s not like a senior team where you carry forward, as U-21 and minor teams change radically from year to year.
“We are missing the entire full-back line from last year of Eamonn Glynn, Cian Dillon and Ciaran O’Doherty, while we also have lost Enda Barrett and Colin Ryan. It is very hard to replace players of that calibre. It’s hard to replace that experience.”
The manager, who is again joined by Cyril Lyons, Alan Dunne and Sean O’Halloran, added that Clare are not as physically strong this year as they were in 2009.
Clare won’t name a team for Wednesday’s game until early next week. Nicky O’Connell is a major doubt due to injury and whether or not he plays will have a big bearing on what the line-up will be.
“In addition, we will be keeping our fingers crossed that all of the lads involved with the senior squad this weekend will come through without injury,” Minogue added.
In addition to the survivors from last year’s final team, Liam Markham, Cathal McInerney (both Cratloe), Diarmuid Nash (Scariff), Cathal Chaplin (Broadford) and Kevin Moynihan (Éire Óg) will be pressing strongly for places in Wednesday’s team.
As match time draws near, Clare fans won’t need reminding of the last time a county team made the journey to the Gaelic Grounds as defending Munster and All-Ireland champions. It was June of 1996 when Clare put their Munster and All-Ireland senior titles on the line.
A last-minute point from Ciaran Carey saw the Banner men stripped of those crowns.
On paper at least, the Clare U-21 panel looks strong enough to get this year’s campaign off to a winning start but failure to produce anything less than their best form may prove costly.

Sherlock is overage

whatever happened to O’ Mahoney, he was a star in the making, wasn’t down for playing with Ballymartyle the last time i saw them either. Kearney was very good back then.

Presume Donagh Stack’s year ban is over kev…has he being hurling for Newtown, he will be well suited to them, fine a cynical

Newtown cynical??? Jesus Puke, you have no idea of cynical if you think they are. I’m sure they picked up a few tricks from their games against Bride Rovers back in the day, but cynical, nah no way. Individually making Brendan Mul and Pat Mul had a stroke in them, but as a team not a chance. FFS they played the most open hurling you could imagine.

Know nothing about him Puke only that he wasn’t banned, just his own club wouldn’t let him transfer, so he has to wait 72 weeks or something to move. In most cases i would have sympathy for the club, and they are right to put the foot down, but i heard they make no effort at all anymore and he’s right to move.

If he was smart he would have moved to Limerick club for a year while up there, and then transfer back to Newtown, IC transfers are far easier to get around.

The Mulcahy’s and Chops are three of the biggest timber merchants I have ever seen, the rest of the Newtown lads wouldn’t be too bad but he will be well suited with them three lads…Think it was 48 weeks but am open to correction, has he it served or is he still ineligable…

what club is Stack from?? Doneraille is it??? why did he move??

No idea. All i know about him is he was in college with a girl i know well, she used to be onto me about him being this great hurler. I saw him with that Minor team i think, he was good alright, but not as was made out. He didn’t seem dirty to me, but it was only one game.

You can’t be calling Newtown cynical based on 2 or 3 players.

Who is chops?

Buttevant, thinks its because they are shit and don’t make any effort to improve.

Yeah is is Buttevant, went to Flannan’s, was a big strong lad for his age then…Won them a Dean Ryan against ASR by taking Nickey O’Connell out of it in 2005 with an awful dirty stroke when Nickey was having a stormer…Was a decent enough colleges hurler, although alot of this may have been down to his size

Chops is Dermot Gleeson kev…

Nickey O Connell went to Ard Scoil?? would it not be nearer for Clonlara lads to go to Killaloe??

Meh, twould be 6 of 1 half a dozen of another…Munchin’s and ASR are probably closer to Clonlara than Killaloe
