Police in Mauritius believe the daughter of one of Irelandâs most famous sports managers may have been strangled to death after disturbing a robbery.
Garda sources in Dublin today confirmed that their counterparts on the Indian Ocean island believe a numer of intruders were already in her hotel room when Michaela Harte â daughter of Tyroneâs Gaelic football manager, Mickey Harte â came in.
âThe police out there are looking at the times when she used her swipe card and have found that the door had already been opened a couple of minutes before she went back to the room,â one garda said.
Earlier, Mauritian police confirmed that the victimâs death was now a murder inquiry.
The 27-year-old Irish language teacher was found dead by her husband, John McAreavey, yesterday. The couple were on honeymoon.
Harteâs father last night described Michaela as his âlittle jewelâ.
Superintendent Yoosoof Soopun, of the Mauritius police, said officers had identified six potential suspects and were confident of an arrest today.
He said McAreavey was in the hotel restaurant when his wife was murdered.
âShe had gone back to the room to get some biscuits to put in her tea and, when she failed to return, her husband went to look for her,â he said. "When he found her in the room, she had been killed. He tried to help her but she was already dead.
âA postmortem has showed she was strangled, she died from neck compression.â
Soopun said the killer had used an electronic key card to enter the room.
âThere was no forced entry into the room,â he said. âWhoever killed her definitely used an electronic card.â
He said police and the government were concerned about the case: âWe are doing everything we can to find whoever was responsible.â
Bishop John McAreavey, an uncle of the groom, married the couple on 30 December in Ballymacilroy, County Tyrone.
Speaking in Banbridge, County Down, last night he said many questions remained unanswered.
"We are upset that she is dead. That is what we are struggling to come to terms with.
âWe are like everyone else. We hope that the questions that surround her death will be answered. We hope in time the situation will become clearer.â
The couple arrived at the hotel on Saturday and were due to leave next Sunday. They had spent the first leg of their honeymoon in Dubai.
A hotel porter was nearby when McAreavey found his wife dead. A second member of staff was summoned, who tried to resuscitate Harte for half an hour. Her body was taken to the Princess Margaret orthopaedic centre in Mauritius.
Harte was often seen by her fatherâs side after key Gaelic football matches and was his only daughter.
Mickey Harte is one of the most successful and respected figures in Irish Gaelic sports, having led Tyrone to three All-Ireland titles, three Ulster titles, one National League, and four Dr McKenna Cups.
Harte is an incredibly spiritual man, a read of his most recent book shows that. Youâd wonder given all heâs gone through at what point does your faith start to waiver. I mean, what âmeaningâ can you possibly find in something like this?
Maybe itâll bring him to his senses and heâll stop believing in fairy tales.
