Apart from the confiscation of land twinned with the subsequent displacement, enslavement and deportation of the poor, the famines (plural), the systematic repression of our native culture and language, the denial of religious freedoms, education, landownership and the vote. Other than that the place was grand alright. A bit damp and drafty in the mud wall cabins but people were happier.
