It’s remarkable. About 4 years ago I’d to go to Norwich for a meeting. Couldn’t be bothered driving. Saw there was a direct train from manc so figured I’d get that despite it being down as a 5 hour trip.
Hopped on. No first class and no buffet car, so no dinner. Got halfway in about 90 mins and thought the schedule must be wrong. Somewhere around Nottingham, the driver announced that anyone staying on had to go to the front three carriages. They then split the train in half, and it turns out the reason it averaged 50mph to Nottingham was there was two engines. Now there was only one. You honestly could have cycled as quick the rest of the way. I drove the next time. I actually got the train back by going an hour in the wrong direction down to London, and changing there, and saved 90 minutes.

I’d add that Irish rail is premium. I love the Galway train once you have a seat.
