Scottish football was exceptionally well served with commentators in that era with the great Archie MacPherson, Jock Brown and Gerry McNee all top notch along with David Begg on the radio.
These in house Celtic or Rangers commentators on the free, illegal, unreliable internet streams on Iraq Goals or BackRow Sports or VIP Sideline or CricFree and the likes don’t have any of the same gravitas at all.
I know I’m coming across as a DD stooge, but as with any business, you re invest profits appropriately, and if there is nothing appropriate to invest the money in, the you sit and wait.
T would be really interesting to know the truth of some of the missed transfer targets, whether it was the board not believing in the value, the board trying to penny pinch the deal, Rodgers not driving things as his salary suggests he should have.
DD is absolutely certain about where the blame lies. His statement is so vehement.
You’re coming across as a bit of a stooge alright. Desmond would have you believe Celtic are some wild exception in world football where it’s impossible to sign a striker despite having £77mn sitting in the bank & after selling the two frontline strikers from the previous season. There was literally no footballer in the world they could sign. It’s an absurd way for a club with any ambition to behave. Rodgers had to get out his contacts book & persuade his old pal Iheanacho to come on a free AFTER the transfer window shut in the end. He may be vehement but Desmond’s rant is contradicted by what’s plainly obvious to observe. And like I suggested earlier I think he’s playing with words too. Rodgers approving signings doesn’t by any means confirm he ended up with the ones he wanted.
Again, this is probably more optimistic than realistic, but my lingering hope is that Rodgers was part of the reason we couldn’t get our targets in. His transfer record has always been patchy and we don’t know if he rejected any signings before. Interestingly one member of this site always blames Lawwell for McGinn not signing but maybe Rodgers holds some of the blame there for telling him he’d be a squad player. Rumours that there was a similar conversation with Lennon Miller last winter.
Anyway I certainly don’t think the Board are blameless and can’t accept that they don’t take the majority of the blame for the lack of effective transfer strategy.
But my hope is that we got to change a stale manager sooner rather than later for once. And someone else may work better with the Board in bringing in players.
Much of the “insider” commentary on this is that Rodgers was invited to sign a deal yesterday and there was a discussion that led to a disagreement that led to a huge row and culminated in his resignation. There were rumours of Rogers signing a new deal yesterday (which seemed to be the intention) and they were quickly replaced by rumours he was leaving. Mad stuff.
And a final point from me for this evening. There is certainly duplicity and careful wording in the DD statement around the transfer window and a new contract for Rodgers that was probably discussed but never offered. And that’s a sort of petty point scoring. Equally though, Rodgers was very quick to tell the media he hadn’t been offered a contract too. And that was equally short of the full truth.
In summary - nobody comes out of this looking great. But we may stumble upon a better team if we can sort out the motivation and the January window.
Robbie Keane links intensifying. Not sure a Shamrock Rovers affiliated Zionist is the answer. Although, counterpoint, he seems to be getting a tune out of Naby Lad CC @Chancer
Brian Barry Murphy has Cardiff going well.
He’s a Cork, so himself and Desmond would get along.
He’s a realistic target.
Ex City youth manager with a record of giving youth a chance which is surely the model Celtic need to be going after.
