Beyond Utopia: Escape from North Korea
A suspenseful, immersive look at the lengths to which people will go to gain freedom. The film follows various individuals as they attempt to flee North Korea, one of the most oppressive places on earth and a land they grew up believing was a paradise.
At the filmās core are a mother desperate to reunite with the child she was forced to leave behind; a family of five - including small children and an elderly grandmother - embarking on a treacherous journey across the Yalu River and into the hostile mountains of China; and a South Korean Christian pastor on a mission to help them.
Leaving their homeland is fraught with danger - severe punishment if caught and possibly even execution - as well as potential exploitation by unscrupulous brokers. Family members who remain behind may also face retribution. Yet these individuals are driven to take the risk.
Gripping, visceral and urgent, Madeleine Gavinās film embeds the viewer with these family members as they attempt their perilous escape, palpably conveying life-or-death stakes.
Watching it here. Always been fascinated/appalled by North Korea but Iāve never seen as much footage from the country as they have in this programme
Was the film crew following them around the village not a give away?
Perhaps they said they were filming the North Korean version of āIām A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Hereā and the authorities bought it.
Missed the doc but that perfectly encapsulates my feelings towards the place. Have fallen down a few YouTube rabbit holes watching footage from there.
The Trigger Happy TV fella Dom Joly did a book years back called The Dark Tourist (visiting places like Iran, Chernobyl, Beirut, the Killing Fields, etc.) and he had a chapter from North Korea. Think he had to stick the memory card of his photos up his hole before leaving
Given what was just broadcast about human excrement and farming practices in North Korea Iām surprised he managed to get the contents of his hole out of the country with him without the authorities confiscating it.

I read about that last week. Itās in response to South Korea sending balloons with propaganda leaflets in the opposite direction.
