Bit pricey.
Also, yay the Fury.
Fowler’s goal ratio is 1:1 as the courageous Fury are narrowly beaten by the capitalists.
North Queensland Fury FC has been defeated 3-2 by Sydney FC in an action packed Hyundai A-League 2009/10 season debut at Dairy Farmers Stadium.
Backed by a vocal crowd draped in green and white the Fury showed their ability to entertain in the clubs inaugural A-League fixture.
Sydney skipper John Aloisi said he believes the Fury will be a force to be reckoned with this season
“I thought they were good, it’s going to be difficult for a lot of teams to come up here and play,” Aloisi said. “It’s a difficult place the supporters got right behind them.”
“They’re going to be dangerous here at home – they’re going to win a lot of games.”
Aloisi even conceded North Queensland had the better of the game in the second half.
“I Think they did, we were controlling the game until they scored from the set piece and then they were on top of us in the second half and we found it tough to get the ball and keep the ball.”
North Queensland Coach Ian Ferguson praised his beaten troops but said he did not want to dwell in the loss so much as learn from the experience.
“To be two –nil down to Sydney and then get it back to two-two – it was a massive loss for us,” Ferguson said.
It was a charge from Fury goalkeeper Paul Henderson on Sydney’s Alex Brosque that led to a penalty kick which was the Fury’s undoing.
Even Ferguson said he didn’t think his gloveman needed to leave his box and challenge Brosque.
“I thought it was going away from goal and he didn’t need to make the challenge but he made the challenge and it gave them the kick,” the Fury coach said.
Sydney went into the break up 2-1, but North Queensland looked the better of the two teams in the closing stages.
North Queensland’s first real chance was made 10 metres from Sydney’s 18 yard box when Captain Robbie Fowler was fouled and sent a curling free kick towards the Sky Blues’ box only to have it turned around the post by keeper Clint Bolton.
Sydney’s Right midfielder Kofi Danning set up Aloisi for a shot in the 6th minute putting Sydney up 1-nil on the scoreboard.
Sydney’s Sung-Hwan Byun took the first corner kick for Sydney in the 27th minute by the Fury’s new replacement Visa player Dyron Daal came back to defend and headed the ball safely away from goal.
Danning put Sydney up 2-nil after a low strike across Fury keeper Paul Henderson’s hands in 30th minute.
The Fury shifted up a gear and pressured the Sydney defence through midfielder Rostyn Griffiths and Daal.
Griffiths became the first go al scorer for the Fury in the 40th minute with a cracking header off a corner kick to pull the margin back to 2-1 in Sydney’s favour.
The game swung to each end of the field for the first 13 minutes of the half but the
Fury levelled through a Robbie Fowler penalty after Jason Spagnuolo was brought down in the penalty box.
The fury continued to press forward after levelling the scores with Williams coming close to handing the Fury the lead.
Aloisi restored the advantage for the visitors after Brosque was brought down in the box.
Fury manager Ian Ferguson was realistic in his assessment of the team’s inability to keep the Sydney strike force at bay.
“To get back to 2-2 was a massive bonus for us but we gave another silly goal through a penalty.”
The Fury were left to lament missed opportunities despite attacking relentlessly for the last 10 minutes including what appeared to be a clear cut penalty being turned down in the 83rd minute after a handball in the Fury’s 18 yard box.
The Fury final flourish came in injury time with two consecutive corners bringing everybody into the box, however despite their best efforts the Fury were unable to find the equaliser.
"It was a charge from Fury goalkeeper Paul Henderson on Sydney’s Alex Brosque that led to a penalty kick which was the Fury’s undoing.
Even Ferguson said he didn’t think his gloveman needed to leave his box and challenge Brosque."
I don’t follow this. Did the gloveman leave his box and then foul Brosque after he had gone into the box or did he not leave his box at all? Sounds like a poor call from the gloveman either way but anything that annoys that Ferguson cunt is good in my book.

I was also confused. Needless to say I did not see the game.

sickening -too many huns at brisbane for them to be successful
Best of luck to North QLD and everything, but after an outrageously brilliant opening to the season, downing champions Melbourne Victory 2-0 in Melbourne, I have high hopes for my beloved Central Coast Mariners this year. We even managed to take out Kevin Muscat, surely the dirtiest footballer ever!
central coast? why do you follow them? you live there?
Yep, NCC I do
