There is literally nothing wrong with that tackle.
Was no intent anyways on Canes part. Was head high no arms so definitely pen…marginal YC based on guidelines ref works under. Interesting to see what citing commissioner says. Generally reluctant to throw refs under the bus bit world rugby gave them update guidelines recently that don’t appear to have been enforced.
It’s a stupid mandate they have given refs where outcome is more important than intent. Theory makes it easier to referee. I don’t think it does removed discretion from the situation.
Personally I think ref used his discretion here and a pen was enough

Sexton should have had yellow as well for swinging arm into Barrett when he scored and probably a penalty back at halfway to restart.

Agreed.
I don’t agree with that form of refereeing. You’d often see it in GAA where the ref will wait to see how badly injured a player is before deciding if it’s a card or not.

Yeah I agree…assume thats not the guidelines refs work under though? Just weak refereeing?
Clear guidelines in Rugby e.g. tip tackle the intent is wholly irrelevant. Land on back =YC land on neck or head = RC. Fine it makes the decision making black or white but does nothing extra to stamp out dirty play.
I haven’t seen the new guidelines world rugby issued but my understanding is they say tackles above shoulder height need more punishment than a penalty. Regardless of intent.
I think it should/must be a combination of intent and outcome

He should in his fuck. The amount of fucking time wasted at these matches going over and back over every little incident is gone beyond a joke at this stage.

Credit the referee and touch judge for having the nuts to call it themselves. It looked a perfectly good pass.
