Corkness is a totally different thing. Itâs their inbuilt cockiness/arrogance. Can be handy when theyâve a good team or have serious talent. Not so good when theyâre rattled
Offaly lads pride themselves on doggedness and a belief that they wonât be beaten if things are close. They havenât had it in a while and are rediscovering it.
Kk are a well drilled outfit and full value for their win. They play with a sweeper but with an offensive plan. They have some huge men. A thurles man coaching them.
Ivan Bolger is a dog. He was also impressive for DCU in the Fitz this year.
Dublin did well to get this far missing key players and can have no complaints about the result
Not the players who battled throughout and you have some good hurlers but the shambles was the way they were sent out to play and set up to play
Playing with the wind in the first half, Dublin absolutely packed out the midfield area witdrawing most of their forwards to this sector. When in possession, they handpassed the ball around this area endlessly or used short stick passes which usually led to one of two outcomes
Kilkenny took the ball off Dublin and got a score
Dublin eventually pucked the ball into the full forward line where there was no player present or one poor lad left to try win possession and then take on 3 kilkenny backs.
If Dublin wanted to crowd the middle well then they should have adopted a running game to attack from there but instead hit it in to Kilkenny backs or some poor lad matched up against 3 full backline players
I felt sorry for the players having to operate within the set up, couldnt fault them for attitude, maybe touch left a few of them down a bit at times but actually some fine hurlers. They deserved to have been given at better chance by their own management this evening
I was at the match , not too sure if the shambles I refer to was as evident on the TV
Kilkenny may have won no matter what way Dublin set up but fuck it put a better foot forward than that
Yes, and their formative inter-county experiences were under the defensive-minded Dalo and his sweeper proclivity, with its focus on damage limitation.
I reckon they set up to avoid McDermott winning the game in the first 15 minutes like he did in the round-robin. They stuck with that despite been given the wind by KK in the first half, the KK goals and showed feck all flexibility thereafter. Being charitable you might say the sending-off stymied their intention to change style in the second half. That would, I feel, be charitable to the point of delusion however. They sold their players short in my view.
Jesus Christ they beat Offaly & Galway without Purcell & two other of their best players.
They were hardly going to move away from O Riann at sweeper after this success.
KK were ready for them with their own sweeper, once they got them two goals it was game over.
KK are a solid outfit, not classy like Tipperary but have a free shot in an all Ireland.
Bolger, Lyng, Vereker will make fine seniors.
Neary is class but obviously size is an issue when he attempts to make the step up, be very much suited to modern day 4/first puckout receiver.
McDermott & Murphy are man mountains, theyâll be dangerous v a Tipp full back line that isnât the biggest.
I wouldnt kill Dublin for having a sweeper but what about all the players cluttering the midfield area and fuck all players inside the opposition 65? Playing with the wind and pucking ball into forwards who were completely outnumbered by Kilkenny backs seemed a poor game plan
Kilkenny are a good team in my view , wouldnt be a bit surprised if they beat Tipp
Gaffney got some good ball but couldnât make hardly any of it stick.
They probably could have attempted to go long with the wind alright but hard to do when KK are allowing the short puckout and have neary + Lyng in the pocket.
A new half forward line for today - Barry has a knock but they are obviously annoyed at how they have been bossed in the air by Cork and Waterford there. The keeper is a converted outfielder which doesnât help as he isnât comfortable on the shorter and intermediate stuff at this level yet despite having a huge puck of a ball.
First time this year to get their strongest six backs on the field
