Hence the question mark pal , I’m a long time out of the scene .Besides by that logic the 2024 minor winners (a quick google says Jude’s ) must have 10 on panel ?!

It’s funny that it was never a possession based game but the rules actually point to a possession based game. The key one is that you’re supposed to play the ball before contact because you can’t tackle while in possession. It’s what the hand pass is for. You can catch it direct from the air, you can run with the ball on the hurley. Maybe we’re only catching up to the rules now.

There are 3 ways in which teams have made it a possession based game.

  1. Throwing
  2. Steps
  3. Back pass to the keeper
  4. Short stick passing

There’s no desire to change throwing especially among some of the Limerick fanboys and steps is really at the discretion of the ref. I think the only rule that could be changed is the back pass like Gaelic football.

Now it could inadvertently lead to even more teams playing sweepers in the knowledge that the corner back or full back can’t go back and has to go long.

The final facet is Short stick passing is highly skilled and should be encouraged.

These games at u20 level have been dogshite so far with teams being totally over coached.
They need to go back to knockout u21 games on Wednesday nights.

Steps are the bigger issue but Tipperary teams have taken the crown when it comes to throwing, you can’t just blame Limerick endlessly when every chip team looks like they are coached by Derek McGrath.

Tipp are the worst culprits for throwing in the country. Steps has long been a problem. Players are supposed to play the ball before contact, not take it into contact. If steps were policed harshly all of a sudden it would clear up a lot of problems, but it would also change the game massively and people aren’t up for that.

A lot of sense in your post but Tipp throw the ball far more than anyone currently. They’re literally playing a running version of water polo.

I’d agree Tipp are as bad as anyone else at the throwing. We are big enough to admit it unlike others.
I’d say Limerick were the kings for the previous decade but Tipp have had to join them to win.

Galway’s resurgence has been made possible by a commitment to throwing and stepping their way out of defence. Themselves and Cork are the main culprits for steps.
Darragh fitzgibbon took 9 steps for the vital goal v Galway in this years league but the Galway lads couldn’t really argue with it.

The game needs a type of review committee like Bogball/Rubby/Soccer has, they need to keep charlatan coaches that are ruining the u20 championship out of the equation and design a game which is contest and territory based which limits throwing and steps.

I don’t think the desire is there unfortunately. The big crowds and colour at a lot of the county games masks the inadequacies in the game.

Club hurling is a much better sport where there are more turnovers due to the fact the players can’t keep possession and the weather.

Was close to your best player.

That’s a very sneering view on Galway and totally incorrect. They’re rejuvenated with some excellent younger players. Tipp haven’t joined limerick really. They took up sweepers and somehow fluked their way to an all Ireland by coming up against teams that flopped against them. That’s nothing like limerick. I’d say Tipp and cork are as bad as each other for steps.

A tour de France from @endakenny reeling in the Limericks with a mention of throwing.

You Tipps say Limerick alot…

Cork and Tipp have been out throwing Limerick a while now…Limerick get penalised far more because of the constant whinging about the big bad Limericks.

But it’s look over there when the ā€˜traditional’ counties do it.

There’s no reeling in… he’s simply expressing what Tipperary and I’d say Cork people feel … little Limerick need to crawl back under their rock and let the traditional boys get on with it.

In fairness to Kilkenny, they never engage with this superiority carry on. It’s why they are a class apart from Tipp and Cork.
