Official TFK GAA Coaches Corner

The only thing of note there is he needs an enforcer. Time to earmark one of the 7 year olds to execute a few softeners on the opposition early doors.

If you saw the exhibition of astro soccer tactics myself & julio gave a few weeks back you’d have been in awe. We mentally destroyed a group of young lads who thought they’d run us off the pitch.

Kicking the bollocks off someone is technically a tactic i suppose

What a wanker

What are clubs doing to build basic strength and conditioning in the 12-14 age group?

We are looking at a 15 minute body resistance routine to be done at the start of training sessions this year… bird dogs, burpees, planks etc and then some specific movements around landing properly (huge knee injury issues in camogie). This looks interesting England Netball | Jump High Land Strong Guidance

any other specific programmes out there for this age group?

Hurling club bringing in very specific, tailored testing and programme for 14s , 16s and minors .
Measurements on jumps and gate testing for speed etc.
Not cheap and a bit hands off in that repeat testing happens at 12, 24 & 39 weeks. Its all App based and very much self monitoring.

What happens the results? Where do they go?

To a committee who decides which players to cut

I wouldn’t be including 15 minutes rigidly into sessions as it gets boring for some young players.

I would definitely include it into all sessions at some point.

I think KP might be talking about girls too in which case your point stands even more. An absolutely sure fire way to get a rake of them to quit at an age when all the stats show keeping them playing is very hard. Sorry to be Shane Smith but you’d be better off incorporating 15 minutes tik tok dancing and a nail bar

15 minutes tik tok dancing is a great idea

Just ordered 20 nail bars, what do I do with them?

Results of testing recorded and compared atcthe testing intervals .

Players have programmes based on results but its self monitored i.e. they submit their numbers to an app.

Plenty of room to manoeuvre, inevitably actual take up will be mixed.

Have you come across any stats on ACL injuries in camogie? and Age groups?

Anecdotaly I believe they are most at risk from 13 to 16?

Haven’t seen stats but we’ve plenty examples in our own club. Alot of ACL issues.

My bunch are 12/13 years olds that have got the Shane Smith treatment for past few years so participation rates are good… however its time to start building a culture of ownership and hard work within the group along with encompassing injury prevention strengthening exercises.

It can be a real challenge changing from a happy clappy environment
to a more competitive one. I’ve found a gradual but clearly defined and communicated change the most effective but there will always be issues as parents and players adjust.

Yeah, i can see it coming. A players/parents meeting at start of year and openly communicate the plan might help things.

Yeah. Definitely helps. Playing time and movement of players between A and B panels caused us the most trouble.

Playing time was shared equally up to u13 but after that we started giving more time to players who trained regularly. Some parents not happy with this.

Moving A players onto B panel also a sticky one.
