On this day

A wonderful piece of writing

The lyrics are pure gold. Above and beyond anything penned today. The melody is based on an old Irish drinking song according to Longfoot himself.

They rang the recovered ships bell 29 times on each anniversary of the sinking for the 29 men lost, after the passing of Lightfoot it’s now rang 30 times to include the man who helped immortalise the tragedy.

Its the same air as Back Home in Derry written by Bobby Sands and made famous by Christy Moore.

Sands borrowed it from Lightfoot’s ballad.

I love Lightfoot’s response when asked about the similarity and why he did not pursue copyright infringement…….”the melody was just an old Irish folk song; an old Irish dirge, I think I took it from that. It’s all folk music and it’s all out there for everyone to enjoy."

Back Home in Derry was Powery’s party piece back in the day. Jaysus he could give it a right rantan.

The Bataclan massacre and other terror attacks took place in Paris on this day 10 years ago.

And so was Robbie Brady’s goal in the Euro 2016 play-off first leg in Bosnia.

“Out of the fog comes clarity…clarity in the form of a priceless away goal from the left boot of Robbie Brady.” - the great George Hamilton.

Bobby Sands had a nice way with words. Another of his songs.

Some man to find the words.

I also loved “Robbie Brady brings us all to our feet in Lille” though I didn’t hear it live as at that precise moment I was dementedly sprinting along the corridor running behind the last row of the lower deck of seats in a stadium in Lille in the manner of a skeleton trying to escape the skin it’s encased in.

As Alan Partridge admiringly said about the text he was asked to recite for a corporate video for Hamilton’s Water Breaks, it was “a lovely phrase, very simple, very moving.”

The Bataclan.
Ten years, Jesus. The year of Tipp Galway I. Cannings pass to Shane Maloney for his 15 seconds of glory. The game that made Galway even if they botched the final.

It was a Saturday morning here and I was at a Fitzy jnr U13’s cricket match. Trying to watch that while keeping updated on the Ireland game while also trying to understand what the hell was happening in Paris.

A couple of things on George Hamilton:

  1. He was very underrated as a commentator
  2. Like many he was treated shabbily by RTE Sport
  3. I only heard him commentate one match on Premier Sports
