On this day in 1945, the American-born Anglo-Irish fascist politician and notorious Nazi propaganda broadcaster William Joyce (popularly known as “Lord Haw-Haw”) was formally charged with high treason in London.
Here’s a little bit more:
Although born in Brooklyn in 1906 to an Irish father and an English mother, Joyce moved to Ireland with his family when he was about three years old. He grew up primarily in Counties Galway and Mayo. He attended school in Galway and was educated by Jesuits at St Ignatius College.
During the Irish War of Independence (1919–1921), Joyce identified heavily with the British establishment and acted as a courier and informant for British military intelligence (often associated with the Black and Tans).
Because of his pro-British activities during the Irish War of Independence, Joyce feared retaliation from Irish nationalists. His family eventually left Ireland for England in the early 1920s.
In 1939, just before the outbreak of World War II, Joyce fled to Germany to avoid arrest by British authorities. There, he secured a job with the Reichsrundfunk (the German radio corporation).
Known for his exaggerated, sneering aristocratic British accent, he became the most recognized voice of the Nazi regime. Though Joyce was not the first person Jonah Barrington of the Daily Express nicknamed “Lord Haw-Haw,” he permanently adopted the moniker.
At the end of the war in 1945, Joyce was captured near the Danish border. He was put on trial for high treason in London. Despite claiming he was an American citizen (and briefly a German one), the court ruled his possession of a fraudulently obtained British passport meant he owed allegiance to the British Crown.
He was hanged at Wandsworth Prison in January 1946. Joyce was originally buried in an unmarked prison grave in England. However, following a decade-long campaign by his daughter, Heather, his remains were exhumed and repatriated to Ireland in 1976. He was reburied in Bohermore Cemetery in Galway, which was his once-home.

On 20 June 1631 an attack on the West Cork village of Baltimore saw North African pirates—Barbary corsairs— storm the sleeping village and kidnap 107 men, women, and children, transporting them to the slave markets of Algiers.
The events inspired the 2015 song ‘Roaring Waters’ by English rockers The Darkness.
I heard about that about a year ago. It must have been some shock to the system to west Cork folk to become slaves in Africa
There was a lot of piracy going on back then.
I remember being on a tour of Majorca where the guide explained that most of the coastal towns were moved inland due to piracy. Leaving the bear minimum at the port.
There’s a lot of Irish DNA in north Spain. Again due to slavery.

Yes, it was mostly English natives from Cornwall who had been planted in Baltimore by Sir Thomas Crooke, although a few Irish locals were also kidnapped.
