On this day in 1944, 76 Allied Prisoners tunnelled out of Stalag Luft III in Zagan, Poland. 73 were recaptured, 50 executed, 3 actually made it back to safety. The subsequent 1960’s film was highly inaccurate in that no American prisoners actually escaped and there were no motorcycles involved.
