100 years ago, the French are routed at the Battle of the Ardennes in one of the opening battles of the Great War. Nearly 40,000 dead on both sides over two days. So far so good for the Schlieffen Plan.

The Germans sack the historic university city of Leuven. They burn down the university library, deliberately destroying thousands of priceless medieval books and manuscripts. Over 200 civilians are shot or beaten to death by German troops.
