150 years ago today - 9 April 1865, General Robert E. Lee surrendered to Lieutenant General Ulysses Simpson Grant at Appomattox Court House.

The Easter Rising began on this day in 1916.

April 24th should be Ireland’s national holiday rather than a day in March in honour of some snake bothering cunt from Wales.

The proclamation was printed in Liberty Hall around this time in 1916.

And later on this day in 1916 the Irish Rugby Football Union Corps were massacred by The Citizens’ Army on Mount Street Bridge.

“Life springs from death and from the graves of patriot men and women spring living nations.”

Up the Republic.

A weekend of poignant anniversaries from the First World War. Today marks the 100th anniversary of the start of the Armenian Genocide. Tomorrow the 100th anniversary of the commencement of the Gallipoli campaign.

The Turks moved the official commemoration to today to overshadow the Armenian anniversary

28 April 1990 – Liverpool seal their 18th top division title with a 2–1 home win over Queens Park Rangers as Aston Villa draw 3–3 at home to Norwich City.

WOOF!

Today marks the anniversary of the death of a truly infamous man, undoubtedly charismatic, but a demagogue of the worst kind. When he shouted into the microphone and addressed his brainwashed followers, those who had not fallen victim to his propaganda shuddered. His arrogance meant that he could never stick to where he knew best, and he invaded other places where he wasn’t wanted*, with disastrous consequences, and inflicted atrocities** that unfortunately will never be forgotten.

The interval act on this day 21 years ago at the Eurovision in the Point Depot was called Riverdance.

It’s turned a few quid since.

His real death occurred when he was spotted in a pub in Patagonia while watching the 1986 World Cup final and couldn’t contain himself when West Germany equalised. His joy was to be literally shortlived on two counts, as he was out the back being lynched by a local gaucho as Burruchaga scored Argentina’s winner a few minutes later.

Any comment from the Taoiseach on the day that’s in it? Taoiseach de Valera was most upset at the (alleged) passing of the Fuhrer in 1945.

Not sure has there been any comment from the blueshirts but it is fitting that the other blueshirts, Chelsea FC, have once again saluted the Führer by winning the league, as they did on the 10th and 60th anniversaries of his death. He’d be proud.

He’d have been a great age in 1986 watching the final in his local in Bariloche. 97.

30 years ago today, 56 people went to a football match at Bradford City’s Valley Parade ground and never returned home. A fire in the main stand robbed 54 Bradford fans and two Lincoln City supporters of their lives.

Tiger Tim Sherwood captains Blackburn Rovers, managed by King Kenny Dalglish, to the Premier League title at Anfield. And I was there.
