Opening Lines to Songs

Was just thinking about this in the car on the way in. There have been some smashing opening lines to songs:

‘One summer evening drunk t’hell I sat there nearly lifeless’ (The Pogues/Pair of Brown Eyes)
‘The island it is quiet now but the ghosts still haunt the waves’ (The Pogues/Thousands are Sailing)
‘I sit at my table and wage war on myself’ (REM/World Leader Pretend)
‘All men have secrets and here is mine - so let it be known’ (The Smiths/What difference does it make?)
‘Oh mother I can feel the soil falling over my head’ (The Smiths/I Know its Over)
‘I am the son and the heir of a shyness that is criminally vulgar’ (The Smiths/How Soon is Now?)
‘I don’t believe in an interventionalist god’ (Nick Cave/Into My Arms)
‘In the morning I am a recluse lost in memories, ideal situations and convulsions’ (Whipping Boy/We D’ont Need Nobody Else)

And my favourite from Palace Music/The Mountain Low:

‘If I could fuck a mountain…’

“You know the day destroys the night, Night divides the day” The Doors - Break on Through

“Punctured bicycle on a hillside desolate” The Smiths -This Charming man

“Did you see the stylish kids in the riot” The Libertines - Time for Heroes

Great stuff - off to a two hour meeting now, shall be thinking of nothing else for its duration.

I live my life in the city /
but there’s no easy way out

I wish I had a bottle /
right here in my pretty face

I am an architecht /
they call me a butcher

The world is a vampire /
sent to drain

Heard Tom Petty there this morning

“She’s a good girl, loves her mama, loves Jesus and America, too”

There’s a rat in mi kitchen what am I gonna go?”

‘When I’m at the pearly gates. This’ll be on my videotape’. Radiohead, Videotape

‘When routine bites hard and ambitions are low’ Joy Division, Love will tear us apart.

Theres a solitary man crying ‘hold me’ and its only because he’s alonely
and if the keeper of time runs slowly he won’t be alive for long

She came from Greece she had a thirst for knowledge
She studied at St Martin’s College, that’s where I
Caught her eye.

I can feel the earth begin to move
I hear my needle hit the groove

River splashes against the rocks and I scale the slope and hope the tracks won’t
Lead me down to dark black pits or Places where we fall to bits…

The screen door slams. Mary’s dress sways,
Like a vision she dances across the porch as the radio plays

Lets go for a drive
And see the town tonight
There’s nothing to do
But I don’t mind when I’m with you

Captain Planet, he’s a hero, gonna take polution down to zero

Sixteen military wives
Thirty-two softly focused brightly coloured eyes
Staring at the natural tan
Of thirty-two gently clenching wrinkled little hands

I’m a little tin soldier
that wants to jump into your fire
you are a look in your eye
a dream passing by in the sky

Son I’m thirty, I only went with your mother cos she’s dirty

Shammy cleaning all the windows
Singing songs about Edith Piaf’s soul
And I hear the blue strains of “no regredior”
Across the street from Cathedral Notre Dame
