Oscars

The Shape of Water is a very unremarkable film. One of the weakest winners I can recall.

It’s a 6/10

2015 - “Spotlight”
2014 - “Birdman”
2013 - “12 Years a Slave”
2012 - “Argo”
2011 - “The Artist”
2010 - “The King’s Speech”
Every single best picture winner named here all the way back has been complete shit or vastly overrated,Moonlight is awful too 2017.

I enjoyed the first 4 on that list.

Every one of them will be looked back upon with Dances with wolves type disdain.

The whole thing was ran by deviants for decades . What do you expects .

I see the Cartoon Saloon lost out again. Third nomination and nare a win.
Fuck Pixar.

Were they up for nomination at the same time? Obviously It’s a better movie but Dances with Wolves is a great old yarn all the same — You cant help but empathize with fellow indigenous peoples being butchered by WASPS.

The Last Emperor, Out of Africa, Terms of Endearment, Ordinary People, Gandhi, Amadeus, Driving Miss Daisy. All winners, all duds.

1962: Lawrence of Arabia — beat Mutiny on the Bounty, The Longest Day, The Music Man, To Kill a Mockingbird

1971: The French Connection — beat A Clockwork Orange, Fiddler on the Roof, Nicholas and Alexandra, The Last Picture Show

1975: One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest — beat Barry Lyndon, Dog Day Afternoon, Jaws, Nashville

1993: Schindler’s List — beat In the Name of the Father, The Fugitive, The Piano, The Remains of the Day

1994: Forrest Gump — beat Four Weddings and a Funeral, Pulp Fiction, Quiz Show, The Shawshank Redemption

These to me are the strongest list of nominees and it peaked in 93/94 and has since been diluted down year by year where the best of a bad bunch is the winner, they really don’t make them like they used to and for what it’s worth three billboards was easily the deserving winner last night.

As a side note - I watched Remains of the Day last Friday when stuck indoors — A great show. I hadnt seen it since i was a teen and had no appreciation for it back then. Hopkins and Thompson are immense in it — It came up against Schindler’s List at the Oscars - only one winner there.
