Lads, can someone explain whats required for qualification and which other teams we need to lose as this goes on. Its quite a convoluted system iirc and we might qualify in 3rd depending on who finishes 3rd elsewhere? Anyone? Cc @Cheasty @Rocko @peddlerscross
First two go through.
Then there are Nations League playoffs using same format as last time. As the competition progresses we will know more about who we want to win and lose but given our ranking we will need a few favours from teams ranked above us qualifying automatically to pass down playoffs spots.
Finishing third in the group is the same as finishing last as far as qualifying is concerned as far as I know. However it would affect seeding for the tournament itself.
@ceist what teams do Ireland need to qualify automatically for Euro 2024 to allow them to get a playoff spot from their nations league ranking. Please provide a detailed answer.
To qualify automatically for Euro 2024, Ireland would need to finish in the top two of their qualifying group. However, if they finish third, they could still have a chance to qualify through the UEFA Nations League playoffs.
The Nations League playoffs consist of 16 teams, divided into four paths, with each path containing four teams. The winners of each path qualify for the Euro 2024 tournament.
The teams that qualify automatically for Euro 2024 will not participate in the Nations League playoffs. This means that Ireland would need teams ranked higher than them in the Nations League rankings to qualify automatically, so that their playoff spot can be passed down to them.
It’s still early in the qualifying process, so it’s hard to say which teams Ireland need to qualify automatically for Euro 2024. However, as the competition progresses, we will have a better idea of which teams Ireland need to support in order to maximize their chances of qualifying through the Nations League playoffs.
I think if 3 teams who were ranked below us qualify automatically then we’re in trouble regarding the play-off. One team we should be watching closely are Sweden as they are *ranked below us but are generally good enough to qualify for tournaments. They actually won Euro 2024 in my FM23 Republic of Ireland career.
*Ranked below us in Nations League terms as they were relegated to the C league. Northern Ireland could be another threat to us judging by their soft group.
I typed with this with a bubble in my eye so you better read it and understand it.
Wales equalise in the last min of injury time
Croatia mugged off by the Welch
The Croats are shell shocked
Spain beat Norway 3-0. This Golden Generation is taking a while to bear fruit for the Norwegians.
Edit: Forgot Haaland was injured.
Missing Haaland is probably a bit of a drawback mind you
2 is hardly a golden generation
Good for Ireland. Wales getting second spot behind Croatia is important for Ireland’s play-off prospects. But worryingly Turkey won 2-1 in Armenia earlier.
Do Ireland have to finish 3rd to get a play off?
No. This group is irrelevant for playoff chances.
I can just hear Spock and his defenders trotting out that line when we finish 4 points behind Greece
The worrying thing is that if we do get a playoff, we’ll have to beat a team of a similar level which is the thing we’ve really struggled with.
Kazakhstan beat Denmark today. That’s probably bad for us, I suppose.
They came from 2 down as well
I just had a look at how the Nations League qualifying aspect works and had just got my head around it when I realised that Cheasty had already explained it.
My predictions have us not getting any play-off spot. Which would be an utter disaster tbqh.
The groups that really interest us are:
D- We want Croatia & Wales to finish as the top two over Armenia & Turkey.
F- Ideally, we want Sweden to do as badly as possible. Belgium & Austria qualifying is the ideal scenario.
G- We want Serbia & Hungary qualifying over Montenegro & Bulgaria.
H- We really really want N. Ireland not to qualify. Need 2 from Denmark, Slovenia & Finland to finish ahead of them.
I- This is probably one of the most open groups. We need Switzerland & Israel to qualify over Romania.
J- Definitely do not want Slovakia qualifying. Need 2 from Portugal, Bosnia & Herzegovina or Iceland qualifying.
From those 6 groups, I think only 1 of those can go wrong or we miss out completely. And it looks like we would almost certainly be in a League A qualifier against theoretically tougher teams like Austria, Wales, Scotland/Norway, Finland/Slovenia as well as most likely Estonia as the highest League D side.
