A GUARD-of-honour will pay tribute to GAA player Shane Whelan at his funeral on Friday.
Teammates from Naomh Mairtin GAA club in Monasterboice, Co Louth will form the honour guard at the requiem Mass at noon at the Immaculate Conception parish church at Tenure.
The popular 19-year-old was fatally injured when hit by a car while crossing the old Dublin-Belfast road on Sunday.
He was killed at the same spot where his grandfather died when struck by a vehicle 22 years ago.
Shane’s remains will be taken from his family home in Tullyard on Friday morning and brought to the church, where a large attendance is expected.
Ciaran Holdcroft, a young players’ coach at Naomh Mairtin club, said: “Shane was a very talented player who had great potential.”
Relatives and friends have been comforting Shane’s younger brother Conor and his parents, John and Bernie.
Gardai have appealed for witnesses to contact them.
