And, unlike so many of his peers who ballsed up from start to increasingly inevitable, finish, Barnes was viciously unlucky when Henrik Larsson ā the best player in Scotland, followed by a ridiculous amount of daylight ā broke his leg in a Uefa Cup tie in Lyon.
As Larssonās leg snapped grotesquely at 45 degrees, so Celticās season did a 180. As the table below shows, their form with and without him was not so much hot and cold as volcanic and Antarctic.

Youād wonder how successful Martin OāNeil would have been without Larsson. He should have won every league. Never had a decent Keeper. Couldnāt win a game in CL. Left the club with ageing players on big wages.

Rergardless of how well Barnes may or may not have done, the SFA would probably have ensured we never won the title that year.
Remember Hugh Dallas winning Ranger the title at Tynecastler with Kyriakos had that last minute swan dive, scandalous. Celtic had to be 15 points the better team than Rangers in that era to win the league, thatās how much referees were worth to Rangers.
