Des Cahill has reached national treasure status and in another 20 years Darren Frehill will have too.

Des’s sometimes self-consciously foolish patter is like a warm, soothing balm. What he does seems very easy but is in fact very hard to do.

More than anybody else I can think of, Des passes the “father in law” test, as in “would you be happy with this man as your father in law?”

About a year or three back a switch flicked in me. I realised I really, really like Des Cahill. I couldn’t remember a time when Des Cahill wasn’t around on RTE. I realised I don’t want there to be be a time when Des Cahill is not around on RTE. He makes me feel reassured and at ease. He’s the broadcasting equivalent of a hot water bottle and a nice cup of tea.

Years ago before the motorways Des and Another left Dublin to cover a hurling match in Waterford. They must of took the wrong road out of kk and ended up in Bennettsbridge. They went into the Corner House to ask directions.

That was the end of the match in Waterford.

I don’t know the answer to that. They should have turned off at Paulstown alright. It’d be an easy enough one to miss back then.

The old road to Waterford, like the rail line, was based on a “triangle” outside of Kilkenny.

The rail line went and still does go into Kilkenny, and then reverses out the other way pulled by the engine at the other end of the train.

But the road obviously didn’t do that. You took the side of the triangle that missed Kilkenny and went through Gowran.

Going into Kilkenny would have been an easy enough mistake to make because it was the “straight” road. But leaving Kilkenny and going through Bennettsbridge would have had you on the road to Thomastown to link up with the road that went through Gowran at the end of the triangle.

Des must have been double jobbing for the Sunday World’s Pub Spy that day.

Michael Lyster had an easy way about him. Des Cahill while clearly a sound man has a panicked way about him.

Bill Herlihy had a lovely way about him. The ability to let lads talk shite and not interfere too much is a lost art
