Blogger Blueblood has written this piece in which he questions the levels of physicality in the modern game and the effect it is having on skillful players. He also questions referees role in the issue. Personally, i think physicality and its merits are valued too highly above the natural skills of the game but it is not an easy task balancing both either.
Great thread harry-should spark some good debate here. I agree it has become too physical, mainly due to Brian Cody instructing referees to “let games flow” resulting in full frontal charges, chopping and clothes lining becoming an acceptable part of the game.

Reckon it was a good thread Harry and agree with the outlook of that article. Try it again over on clarehurlers and it’ll go down better.[/quote]
discussing the physicality of minor hurling teams would go down a lot better over on that forum
Not so sure on this one. Thanks for the article which was reasonably written and well referenced, if that is the word. The problem is really GAA fans are particularly blinkered (me included), a harmless flick when one of your own does it seems a hanging offence when one of the other lot do. Sportsmen in general have got a lot bigger stronger and fitter and maybe this is the inevitable result. To be honest, the more I think about the first kilcrmac sending off on Sunday, the more convinced I am that sexton was right. An innocuous enough looking flick with a hurl broke Michael rice finger in five places. You have an intelligent poster like black and amber incensed by that challenge who saw nothing especially wrong with the kilcrmac one which was different really only in effect. In these cases, a slip or an accident is bullshit. It might be if I did it but these lads are senior inter county hurlers because they know exactly what they are doing with the hurl at all times. As regards holding, you would need a second ref to watch the off the ball stuff. The advantage rule is a farce however. The worst of the lot, is allowing a current inter county manager onto the rules committee. What is Brian cody’s raison d’être? To give his team the best possible advantage at all times. Anyone who thinks he is neutral is an idiot. If he found himself with a small, light skilful team next year he would completely change his tune, and then change it back again If bigger lads came through.
Two changes are needed I think. A sin bin to free refs to punish dirty play without the far too excessive sanction of sending someone off which should only be reserved for dangerous play. More lads would get binned and would be forced to change. This bullshit black card proposal is also going too far by permanently removing lads, and ruining games. Second measure is divers need to be banned by a reviewing committee after. That would remove a huge portion of frees that are given today.
