Players Who Had It But Mysteriously Lost It

He is 35 now. And lives in Middlesboro by choice.

A fantastic player with Valencia. I was clamouring for Liverpool to buy him back when Rafa took over as I felt the Spanish contingent might help him get back to his best.

Think I had him already in this thread.

Yeah he was mentioned earlier alright.

Smashing player back in his day. Think he’s being generous by saying things went downhill in his third season at Middlesboro - the fact he even contemplated joining them was proof that he’d fallen spectacularly.

Had a chance to go to Athletic Bilbao I think who would have loved him as there’s not too many Basques they can buy in but turned it down to stay in Boro reserves. Odd.

He had an all-star in the bag by 20 then dropped off the face off the Inter-County planet.

People are arguing that Lentini never had it alongside others who are admanant that Gillespie did have it.[/quote]

You have to remember with Lentini as well that he was Italian at a time when the foreigner rule was in voke in Italy. That meant his price sky rocketed.

I never meant to give the impression that the guy was useless or anything only that he was never worth 13 million at that time. He also doesn’t fit this thread as it wasn’t a case of him being brilliant and then becoming shit. He was never brilliant in the first place and then had a car crash.

Sorry lads didnt mean to regurgitate the same names. I couldnt believe he still lived in Middlesbrough- That was my main reason for posting it.

Sociadad fcuked away the league the time he was playing for  if I remember?

Lentini was every bit as good with Torino as Totti was with Roma, the fee was a shock but to say he wasn’t in the top 5 players in Italy would be plain wrong imo. I still remember him cracking the crossbar in the 92 UEFA final when he played Ajax on his own.

One of the best penalty takers there ever was as well. Just stroked it down the middle every time.

I remember my heart sinking when he stood up to take the decider in the World Cup against us. Given actually nearly saved it as well.

Great Valencia team back then.

Canizaires in goal.
Ayala, Angloma and the old Italian lad Carboni in defence.
Baraja, Kily Gonzalez, Almeda, Angulo
Claudio Lopez. Pablo Aimar.

A lot of those left the scene following moving to Italy. Kily Gonzalez as well - didn’t he move to Inter? Claudio Lopez went to Lazio - he’s back in Argentina last I heard.

Ah that’s crazy. Totti has been top scorer in Italy for at least two seasons. Lentini never reached those heights.

A- He ws a winger
b- He was in a car crash
c- Totti was no better in his 1st 2 years in Roma’s 1st team than Lentini was in Torino’s. Not by a long chalk.

So you compared them first of all and now you seem to be saying that they cannot be compared.

The truth is that we will never know how good Lentini would have been.

Adrian Morrisey won the Leinster and All-Ireland with Kilmacud Crokes.

Totti me hole.

Where are his medals?

All style and no substance.

other than league and world cup medals?

Was he any good at marking space though?, thats the real question!!!

Is he a club footballer in Wexford?

we have the ball- make the pitch bigger - they have the ball make it smaller - simple

Believe it or not, the white lines of a pitch dont change during a game.

Anyway was Totti a good space marker?

You gotta master and organise the space.

Evolution sees Cody’s men dominate the decade

Not so much the perpetual revolution of Chairman Mao as the perpetual evolution under Chairman Cody. Their greatest strength was their ability to adapt. The 2001 All Ireland semi-final defeat taught them the importance of hunger and high standards, the 2005 equivalent the need to organise space better. It helped that the manager possessed the resources to put such lessons into action. But never forget that none of this was preordained. Cody made it happen. Top three players of the decade Henry Shefflin, Tommy Walsh, JJ Delaney

Mendieta is a huge music fan, particularly bands like the Velvet Underground, Mercury Rev, Wilco, Yo La Tengo, Pavement, Galaxie 500. I’d imagine the enviable gig scene (and the wages on offer at Middlesbrough) attracted him and kept him in England.
