I think games like tonight suit us where we can sit deep and look to defend the edge of the box, be pragmatic, make it a battle and play on the break. Portugal for all their technical ability need room to play and lack a directness.

Gave that kind of “stop hitting yourself” little punch that young siblings do. David Beckham got sent off for a little kick at a World Cup before though so you could argue any belt warrants a red card. I’d say there was less in it than Barron’s punch on Hegarty but you have to allow for the fact that there’s less leniency in soccer.
It was Dara O’ Shea that he punched.
Thought Cullen was really good tonight. Doherty was excellent in the first half but he tired badly (as did a few others understandably).
We just got too narrow and static really at the end. McClean was poor for the first goal but we probably should have had help there too given we had so many men back but we were just a bit static.
Hard to blame Hendrick for the second one. Think fatigue was definitely a factor in his clearance and if it was angled a little differently it was probably game over. But we probably should have been wise to Ronaldo on a full back in those situations. Again think we were just so tired that all eyes were on attacking the ball around the middle of the goal and we didn’t recognise the threat.

Connolly had two or three half chances and one great chance, if McClean had a first touch there was a goal chance there

Hard to blame Hendrick? He kicked it at the only Portuguese player he could have. If he kicked it with his left he could have launched it down the field.
