Portugal v ROI- WCQ 2022

I suppose the question mark here is the arbitrary use of this added added time, it is always completely contextual.

Just have a countdown clock in the bloody stadium and remove all ambiguity

Connolly lacked finesse but he kept two top defenders very busy

We also could have been 2 up in fairness … If Spock can maintain that level of overall performance and the younger players grow/develop we should do ok for the next qualifying campaign - but as you pointed out earlier - where are the goals coming from? Connolly running flat out is grand - but when he gets a glorious chance he needs to be scoring. … Can we give up the middle so often going forward?

bang. nail on the head.

This is why we perform better against teams that will have the ball more than us.

Against teams we have the ball against we concede the middle and they invariably counter into huge amounts of space. Hopefully Cullen will fix that, he sat in lovely last night.

Hendrick really does need to be let go, he hasn’t really played well since 2016, that’s a hell of a long time to be carrying a lad on past performances

They were up against a much superior side. Calling them shit players and calling it a shit performance is utter nonsense. It was a really creditable performance by a young team against superior opposition. It doesn’t matter that they’re professionals, they were up against much better professionals. When viewed in context (young team that has been shit for years unlucky to lose against good team with superior players) this was a really good showing.

This is one of your more bizarre outbursts.

Hmmm

I didn’t call it a shit performance, you made that up.

I called out two players for having a poor performance and the factual nature of mistakes and missed chances cost us, you can excuse that all you want and live in happy fairy land if it makes you feel better about yourself.

We lost a game we should have won, Portugal weren’t at it at all.

is it wrong?
We didn’t take advantage of Portugal being off it.
We should have been 3 down, weren’t and could have been 2 up.
If Portugal were at it we’d have been well beaten and everyone could get back to hammering “Spock”.

ok mate

historically

Look I can’t help it if you’re going to be deliberately belligerent.

Yes it’s wrong. You can’t hold the simultaneous opinion that we should have won but also should have lost by more.

Shit performances - I presumed was aimed at a couple of players rather than the over all team.

I’ve already said it was a decent performance multiple times.

On your point about encouraging for the future - absolutely - Bazunu, O’Shea, Duffy back in form. Egan was brilliant. That looked like a very well organised, compact unit
Doherty at left full - for another campaign maybe - very encouraging, Coleman hasn’t long left in reality.
The young lad that came in coped very well and was very impressive.

Knight for Hendrick would be an upgrade.

Fitness is a huge issue though. Some lads just aren’t fit for 90 minutes coming back from their clubs. I don’t know how the manager deals with that. Does he only pick lads that are getting regular game time and are club fit?

Kenny needed to go to the bench sooner last night I thought.

replace should with could there mate.

Some pundits are fucking horrendous.

Your words mate. Replace yourself.

It sounded like you were talking about last night’s match. That’s what the thread was about. in fact in your first post that I replied to you specifically referred to last night’s match.

I’m not being belligerent at all. A low ranked team put in a performance way above expectations against a much higher ranked and superior team, and your response is to pour scorn on some of the players, and refer to shit performances and shit players.

It’s an entirely unreasonable response.

Bruno Fernandes was shit last night

We have shit players.

It was a decent performance and we lost because of shit players.

The manager has been scorned since his appointment despite having these shit players, I haven’t seen anyone jumping to his defence

Go on away back to cloud cuckoo land there for yourself if this is too harsh for you

Is it the bad language that upsets you?

Connolly last night reminded me of Javier Mascherano in the Argentina-Nigeria World Cup match of 2018. He was simultaneously brilliant and terrible. He’d remind you of lads who’d run about a lot during a match during lunch break at school, causing absolute chaos, completely unsettling the silkier players, and then when the ball would come to them, they’d fresh air it.
