Why has the Irish language become so unpopular? Why did our Brehon laws become so unpopular? ā€¦the short answer is that most of the Island are soup takers and West Britsā€¦ football is a game brought over with the Normans, hurling is our indigenous sport.

Iā€™m not sure, pal. Do you know or would you like me to find out? By the 18th century Galway was one of a few strongholds.

Find out for me, Iā€™m not what youā€™d class as a record, folklore or something else. I always thought the first mention was in the statutes of Galway when it was banned from the city. Could well be wrong.

Well our annals were written between the 800-1200s and they record it there as being played by the peopleā€™s of Ireland for a thousand years before themā€¦

Which annals were they?

I think that Gerry Adams is an incredible politicianā€¦and was well within his right with that tweet.

Heā€™s a living legendā€¦a real leader of nationalists.

Gerry has it all lads, the leader when it coiunted in fairness to himā€¦ VB said it right wiht him probably wouldā€™nt have the troublesā€¦without him youā€™d have absoulte war.

The good ones palā€¦actually wiki says that hurling was first recorded in the 5th centuryā€¦remind me next week when i am home and ill get you as much as you want on the subject.

The mythology refers to a hurling match between the Tuatha De Danaan and the Fir Bolgs before the first battle of Maigh Tirra.

@maroonandwhite - this might answer your question. I read it in Gods and Fighting Men by Lady Gregory.

Hurling played today is what the brit landlords invented. The hurling of yore is completley different

But is mythology proof though?

Dead right. They play stickstick now. The only team playing real hurling is Limerick.

So as well as poverty and persecution can we blame them for sweeper systems as well?
