Powerade Leinster Schools Cup 2012 - Official Thread (also incorporating the Northern Bank Ulster Sc

The Ed Byrne one probably wasn’t the best, the rest were absolute class

My thoughts are with balbec at this difficult time as his beloved Gonzaga went down 22-8 to the mighty Terenure College today.

I am absolutely gutted Sid but I am sure that they went down fighting. Terrible day, Wisla Krakow just went out of the Europa League.

Thought you would have been on raving about Mike Brewers young lad? A respected judge of these matters has told me he is the best schools player in the country and someone we should look to cap as soon as possible

He is not even the best schools player in his school. The full back Dardis is a far better prospect.

The Schools’ Cup doesn’t have barstoolers following it, it has respected judges giving considered opinions. Different class, my fiends. Different class.

He was also referenced. Haven’t seen him to best of my recollection but saw Brewer playing in the forwards for a Leinster schools side, he’s a big lad

Quarter Final day in the Northern Bank Ulster School Senior Cup.

The big shock was Inst losing to Ballyclare High School. With Ballyclare High School now drawn against Wallace High School in the semi final, we’re looking at a surprise finalist on 17 March.

Quarter Final Results

Wallace High School 35-7 Bangor Grammar
RBAI 3-7 Ballyclare High School
Methodist College 48-3 Banbridge Academy
Ballymena Academy 12-15 Campbell College

Semi FInal Draw

Wallace High School v Ballyclare High School
Methodist College v Campbell College

I’m utterly seething at the manner of CUS’s 22-17 loss to Kilkenny College yesterday. A try scored by an offside player with the last play of the game  I hope Father Daly had a stern word with the referee after the match.

But at least we won’t have to look back to the legendary team of 1998 anymore who came within 46 points of Blackrock in that classic quarter-final. There are new heroes down Leeson Street way. Sub Mariae Nominae.

'hon the methodists

Hon the Cats. Just one win away from a first ever final appearance.

There was certainly no doubting where the main rugby football action of the day came from today and that was Donnybrook. And the semi-final clash between defending champions Clongowes and Terenure College didn’t disappoint. Other less important games had to be moved to later in the day to avoid the 12:30pm kick-off time such was the interest in this semi-final slugfest.

A heroic performance by Terenure as they dug in to hold onto a 10-8 lead on a pitch that was muddier than the Somme and sandier than the beaches of Normandy. That is until the last minute of normal time when the Panzer-like Clongowes forwards ploughed through the heroic Gick rearguard to score the winning try. Even still ‘Nure could still have tied it up with the last kick of the game but Billy Dardis’s nerve failed at the vital moment. And thus Clongowes’ three in a row dream remains alive. March 18th will be their “D-Day”.

I disagree strongly with this. He showed great leadership to take on the responsibility. The wind was blowing from right to left and he kicked it to bring it in but the wind never took hold of it. An immense talent.

Spare me all this new-fangled socialist bullshit about teachers encouraging rather than criticising their pupils and “duty of care” etc Fenway. I personally think Dardis should get five slaps of the leather from the headmaster in the morning for letting his team mates down. The old ways are best. He failed, and whatever he does in his future professional career, be it sporting or business, he’ll carry that failure with him and rightly so.

Sid, the wound he will feel for letting his School down will burn longer that a few slaps of the leather. And rightly so.

Delighted the Gick lost. Their best player Dardis should be playing for Newbridge.

I like the way you spelt “school” with a capital S there balbec. Particpating Schools in this competition are a cut above the rest and the capital S pays due deference to that fact, it separates them from mere “schools”.

Get your facts right TIm. Terenure have NEVER poached another player. Dardis and Doyle joined in fourth year of their own accord. They recognised that Terenure possessed the best players at that age group having just won back to back JCTs. In addition both their Fathers are past pupils.

That’s the nature of rugby, business and life, Tim. Dog eat dog. Natural selection. There can be no room for sentiment or sympathy.
