For a local pub that you just to go for drinking and not much else this is what I like to see:
-Rough around the edges
-Good quality Guinness
-Efficent friendly bar staff
-Convinently located to a bookmakers
-Jukebox
-Dart Board
-Good stools
-Staff willing to make you a sandwich or throw on chips if your hungry
-Round tables with a shelf underneath to leave your drink on while playing cards
-Woman should magically appear at about 11:30pm.
-TV for watching sport and sport only
-Newspapers behind the bar
-Good Quality ice. None of this watery thin shit. I what big thick cubes

Do you know of any boozers with no bookies close to them? If you do let me know.

-After hours for locals if wanted
-Cheap carry out if the above is not possible
-At least one grumpy old man slouched on the counter
-Older Locals from different political persuasions to ensure banter
-Nothing in the bar should look new
-Open fire for the winter
-Any request for a cocktail should be met with howls of laughter followed by a wud ya fuck off
We probably have had stacks of threads on this in the past, but what do people look for in a pub?
1.Good beer this is a must. You could score well on all other factors but if this is low then you may as well give it up.
2.Manly I am happiest in a pub which has a bit of a bloke feel to it. Not these fun boy places that sell cocktails and the likes.
3.Women of course.
4.Music not a necessity but a useful addition. Of course the more obscure the music the happier I am.
5.The lack of showing effort pubs that dont even try have a much more chilled out vibe.
6.Service very important also.
Lack of food in your face this serves no purpose in a pub, which is primarily for drinking
8.Consistency you know that if you go there you are guaranteed a reasonable night
Indifferent to music in a pub really. Usually it’s too loud and I’d rather go without.
Anything with low seating and funky lighting is out for me.
Can tell alot by the barmen. Gelled hair and silk shirt can fuck off. Casual jumper is fine, shirt and tie is grand too if it’s not a modern shirt and tie combo. Tux in Nearys is nice to see sometimes.

Forgot resident GAA expert who remembers every match that ever took place down to the smallest detail. As a follow on there should be at least one conversation everynight starting with: name the team that played in x match in x year

That would be an example of a pub that is trying too hard. Reminds me of O’Donoghues. Trying too hard to be grumpy and traditional.
Fuck the after hours drinking. I wouldn’t expect a pub owner to stay behind just so I could have a few more pints.

I dont want them grumpy I just want them to make fun of the funboy.
I should say though there are pubs that you wouldn’t and shouldn’t expect to get cocktails in but if they do cater for people who want them then I don’t see a problem.
The pub shouldn’t be dominated by this carry on though. Nothing worse in a pub looking to get served and the bar man is crushing green stuff into a glass.

That’s it exactly Hlano.
Well said.
The latter type of pub is not my type at all though.

You don’t get the whole point of this thread do you. It’s for the criteria you want to see in a pub. I’ve no problem with bars serving cocktails, but it’s not a likely to a pub I will frequent very much.
